This might sound normal to you and to most Europeans. It is not for Russians. If you are russian you are russian. If you spend your whole life abroad you obviously learn languages and cultures, but you stay russian. It's a pretty simple fact to me.

This right here. If Barkov was Russian, he would consider himself Russian. But he's not Russian, so he doesn't. In other words. Russians consider themselves Russians, regardless where they live. Barkov doesn't. Thus, not Russian.

I think this has come up with every Finnish GDT in this tournament.

The same thing goes other way around aswell. If an american moved to England he would feel himself still an american. If a finn moved to Russia he would feel himself finnish etc.

But Barkov was born and raised in Finland so it's not a big surprise that he feels like being a finn eventhough he is ethnically russian.

I remember when the same Russian source had Selanne's interview. Later Teemu told he haven't ever given that interview / heard about them. They do fake interviews, but this could be true though. Let's face it, his dad is Russian. Russian media will ask things like this. Like our media would ask if Selannes son played for USA. (Selanne's son plays for Finland, even while he hasn't lived in Finland at all).

This is the game I have been waiting for.

tarasenko-panarin-bob-malkin-kovy, let's finally see how we can do against them.

My fear is that speed will kill our team and we will take way too many penalties.

Also Barkov was born in Finland, if he wants to play for Finland then let him play, and our soccer players are quite brutal and that comparison is boring.

with the winner getting a home-town czech team in the qf and possibly canada in the sf, the road to the finals may actually be smoother for the loser of this game.

but then again, in these one game elimination tournaments anything could happen. maybe the winner would face belarus in sf and not canada. it just takes some lucky bounces and a hot goalie (which i would argue that finland and russia have the best in this tournament).

Let the game throwing begin! I read Russia is putting Bobrovsky on goal and rumours from morning ice said it looks like Rinne plays. That doesn't indicate of anyone throwing at least. I bet Russia has some "attitude problems" playing though. Hopefully both play normally, we'll see.

Finland's lineup per Iltasanomat:

Tuomo Ruutu-Petri Kontiola-Teemu Hartikainen
Jussi Jokinen-Aleksander Barkov-Joonas Donskoi
Leo Komarov-Jarkko Immonen-Ossi Louhivaara
Janne Pesonen-Joonas Kemppainen-Juhamatti Aaltonen

13th forward Juha-Pekka Hytönen

Sami Lepistö-Juuso Hietanen
Anssi Salmela-Esa Lindell
Tuukka Mäntylä-Jyrki Jokipakka
Topi Jaakola

Pekka Rinne (Juuse Saros).

Not playing: Pihlström, Ohtamaa

Who else can throw a game like the Russians? If they don't show up, it's not like it would be the first time!

I wouldn't be surprised if selected stars are rested in what is essentially an exhibition match at best.

It's of course anybody's guess if his parents willfully steered him into that direction or did they do their best to emphasize his Russian roots. But even if one does the latter, one can still fail unless they lock the kid completely into the confines of his home for those first few years.
.

If you play in Finnish teams for your life and live in Tampere, go to finnish schools and hang out with the Finns, you will be Finn. You will adapt. Finland is country that you choose love, not on force. There is just no way you would always be the foreign kid.. the hockey teams are like another relatives to you most of the cases. I feel good what Barkov said to media: It's slap in the face of doubters, he has chosen his sides. I would like to see him going to Finnish Army at older age like Mikko Koivu did when he already playedi n the NHL, just to show heart even more. Of course, Army can be hard place if you have Russian family, as you will be taught operations against your root country. Maybe he is given liberation of his army service.

Hopefully no game throwing..that would be a shame as this should be one hell of a match

And really..I think the losing team should be careful what they ask for if in fact they want to throw the match...between Sweden and Czech Rep....I think Sweden is the more scary opponent regardless of the 'home town' crowd

Europeans tend to define their nationality by their passport. Russians tend to do it by culture.

The nationality in the passport does change easily. The cultural nationality doesn't. Look, Russia is a multinational state. Nail Yakupov is a Tatar because he comes from a tatar family. Nobody in Russia argues about that or has a problem with that.

Not in Finland's case. Cultural tradition is the exact reason why Barkov is Finn. Once you grow in Finland and how her life is, you have memories and love in this place, you become a finn. You don't even get Finnish passport easily. Not even relatively easily.

1.The idea of the african heritage is based on theories, not facts.

2.You missed the point of the discussion. We talk about cultural heritage.

If Barkov himself feels like a Finn, I don't know why couldn't he be called a Finn.

Of course he is Finn. Questioning it is wrong. I'm not claiming Nico Rosberg is Finn even if he is top drivers in F1. This is just Russians attacking when they see succes, claiming for a guy who has already decided.

Eremenko? WTF. Soccer people are delusional. Soccer Hardcores are worse than anything, thinking everybody loves their stupid sport, and even thinking that some one kicking that ball in the grass is somehow more worthy than other sports. It's just a sport among others, absolutely nothing else, and will never be.

"soccer is more than sport" says every soccer fan. And some sheeps think this kind of mantras are some kind of fact.

question to finn fans: honestly what do you want to win or lose this game?

question to finn fans: honestly what do you want to win or lose this game?

Doesn't matter, so why not win more than lose. Moving to other city cant be that bad in Czech Republic.

To be honest i thought Barkov's mom was a Finn, just assumed his dad found someone while playing in Finland for so long

So i guess he doesn't have any Finnish blood but he was born and raised in Finland and thus spent majority of his life here, all his friends etc. are Finnish, speaks fluent Finnish and he calls Finland his home. So i guess that's that, just like you said.

You can't control where your parents are from so basically no one should be called only *insert country here* just because your parents are from there.

For the sake of rivalries, it would be nice if Russia wins.

That would set up QFs of Sweden-Finland and Russia-Czech, not to mention the possibility of a Canada-Russia SF.

Okay, enough with the soccer and nationality talk. It's OT at this point. This is a thread about a hockey game.

question to finn fans: honestly what do you want to win or lose this game?

I think any team has to play every game to win. I don't know how a coach could tell his team to lose the game, and then tell them to win the next game. You end up playing whoever it is you play. The Czechs are going to get a boost from their fans whoever they play, but Russia plays every game against teams who have nothing to lose, who are sky high through the ceiling, and who think they can beat the Russians. Win or lose, it will just be another day at the office!
