Left disappointed.

Good defensively is not what he was drafted 1st overall for, or why he is the captain of team USA (also a mistake).

He did nothing offensively you might expect for a player of his reputation. The Toronto playoffs make more sense by the season.

When’s the last time he played an important game and wasn’t “injured”?

He literally missed USA's last game with an upper body injury. You think he healed 100% between games?

The last time he was completely healthy was Game 2 in Boston last playoffs. He got injured in preseason, came back, it got worse - he went to Germany, came back. Been playing through it. It's hopeful that it won't get worse this time but it happened last time so who knows.

Seems like his health status depends on whether the team wins to me

What happened in game 7

There wasnt a game 7, they won in 6.

And to the contrary, the team winning depends on his health status. Hard to win when your best players aren’t 100%. Unfortunately for Matthews battling his body and staying healthy has been a struggle.

Sorry I misread as 21-22 playoffs

Good teams and great players win regardless

He's been injured for a while now. He wasn't healthy in their last playoffs.
I’m sure

complete non-factor, again.

softest, most disinterested, soy-boy, bland, no fangs, no grit NOTHING hot-dog player.

its no wonder TML are going nowhere in a hurry.

Eichel was invisible for 2 weeks.

Complete nonfactor? He was the best player in the game with the most points of any player on both teams (tied with Marner).

Also played a role on the GWG.

They lose that game in regulation without him.

The US iced the puck and had 3 bad defensive players on the ice with Canada's top line coming on. The centers job is to support to D-man along the board. It looks bad on him because Hughes was cheating for offense so everyone just assumes it's Matthews guy because Hughes was nowhere to be seen - but the center isn't supposed to be playing man on man with the other teams center.

Hughes didn't switch back when Matthews went in for support. Those two don't play together so there was likely miscommunication on what would happen. That's why that icing was costly.

Jack is the last player to blame on that, lmao. He goes to McDavid and then Marner makes a pass to a vacant point as to where the dman walks to the top the circles in the slightest and if it's a good skating dman, they'll make it to the high slot but the time Hughes tracks back. Fox/Matthews were at fault solely for the GWG

He definitely played great last night, not sure how anyone can deny it

Ugly defensive lapse on the GWG though

It was a costly icing. The centre is supposed to support the centres on board battles. Matthews went in for support, Hughes didn't realize and come back and then Matthews looks like he just skated away from McDavid and gets blamed for it. The centre isn't supposed to play man on man with the other teams centre. It was the right play but Matthews should have realized he was playing with 2 players who weren't going to circle back and just stayed in front. Matthews was the best offensive and defensive player for US last game - so blaming the whole game on him is quite the reach. Without him it's a 2-0 regulation win for Canada.

Jack is not the last player to blame on that. Since when does the centre have to play man on man? They're supposed to support along the boards.

I think it's a major back to the drawing board moment for USA Hockey. What was supposed to be the US's best collection of talent in a generation once again falls flat on its face, stonewalled by Canada's greatness. It's stars Matthews/Eichel producing 0 goals and its other players more focused on planning mass fights in team group chats before games.

I think this should be a real eye opener for the US, a real look at yourself in the mirror "who are we" moment.
