Why are certain hockey pundits and fans speculating Matthews leaving? This is the best place for playing in terms of attention and things to do hockey wise.

He hasn't shown any signs of disatisfaction or sherking away from responsibilities of a media heavy market.

I only remember one franchise player leaving...but it was for Toronto.

If Leafs lose Matthews that's on ownership, but it won't happen...never does.

Also this is weird considering Friedman just came out and said he will stay of Toronto remains competitive

My 2 sense is if the cap is going to jump he might sign a 3 year bridge?

If he decides he wants out he wants out. Just make sure if he isn’t signing. You get something.

It's the obvious Leafs hate and trolling.

It's one way the fans try to get under peoples skin.

I highly doubt management will allow him to leave.

Leafs will do whatever it takes to make him happy. Matthews will get paid.

Can we close this nonsense? Matthews will be handed a blank cheque and there's little to no reason to suggest why he would want to leave. If he does, it won't be because we let him walk. It'll be cuz of his hometown of Arizona or something. It's not like he's gonna shift over to a different market just to try his luck. Making it a topic of discussion is pointless and a waste of energy

So what if he wants 20m and they only have 10m in space?

That’s literally impossible. The most any single player can get is 20%

On an 85 cap it’s only 17 max.

Plus all their contracts save marner/Tavares/rielly
Are up.

They. Won’t sign players that take up that room.

Let's be honest, money will never be the reason he leaves.

There is never going to be a scenario where the Leafs say "He was asking too much so we let him go." A player of Matthews' caliber will get paid what he wants in Toronto.

My prediction: he will sign the highest AAV in the league, regardless of if the cap goes up or not. Also regardless of if it's here or not.

I mean. Sure he could.

If the cap is going up to 95-100 in 1-2 years after his contract is up. I would want max ish if I was him.

The other option would be if they don’t know then take your 13 ish for 2 years and sign again when they know how the cap will go

I think he'll re-sign. I don't mind if he does shorter deals to keep the Leafs honest ... I'd prefer he signed for 8 and did it 1.5-2M AAV below what he'd expect in Free Agency.

But part of me wonders if there's a small chance he feels the Leafs are disadvantaged by penalties/suspension/take abuse and feels he's got a better cup chance anywhere else.

If this franchise lets Matthews walk as a UFA I don't know if I can continue to support them.

Maybe if he like wins 2 Cups in the next 3 years but I don't see that happening. If he leaves in like 2030 after the next contract fine, he had a good career here, but to let him go after only 8 years is a disgrace by Management.

NHL CBA really should have a bigger advantage for re-signing your own players in the Hard Cap Era. Like 6 years max to change teams and 9 years max to stay.
