He’ll still score 50 goals and 100 points just going through a cold streak to start the season which makes his on pace numbers look bad. If he went through a stretch like this in the middle of the season he’d still be on pace for 50 goals and there wouldn’t be a thread like this.

To be fair to Matthews, he is performing to the level of his peers. For example, he has as many even-strength goals through a quarter of the season as does, say, Robin Salo. True, Salo is a rookie, a defenceman, plays for one of the worst offensive teams in the league, averages 8 minutes less of ice time per game, and has only played in 4 games, but whatevs.

He went on an insane run last year and it will be hard to repeat 60 but I don’t think anyone would be surprised if he did. He’s that special. Weird thread.

All while having Matthews off to the worst start of his career, missing multiple top 4 dmen to injury, and both starting goalies. And yet daily threads about how bad the team is and how doomed they are. I have never seen anything like it in all of my years on here. Reading this forum you'd think they were solidly out of the playoffs and imploding into the basement.

Having said that, he’s still a fantastic player and should start piling up goals soon I’m sure.

He was better last year, the players voted him for the Lindsay. If we discredit that then we discredit the three that McDavid has won. So I can understand people calling Matthews better during that season. That's reasonable. As for career, obviously not.
