30 goals is going to feel like 70 this year and he hits 29.

What an awful season, hope this is just a terrible blip and not a sign of premature decline.

I know people here like to slobber over goals but Im happy Matthews play making is up and his overall production has him at 94 pts per 82 vs ~108 per 82 last year, only down 14 pts per 82 which was mostly due to being a bit banged up/hurt first 20 games of the year.

He has not had a major decline as a pt producer, and is evolving for the better.

If he could get 40-45Gs and 60-70A a year he'd finally become the franchise 1C who is more likely to consistently produce come playoffs time.

Hoping Matthews goal scoring rebounds a bit but his ability to make nice passes, draw defenses and find open/trailing mans, and be able to thread cross ice seams/needle tough coverage zones continues to improve.

I dont want to see 65G and 35A matthews again.

40G and 70A would be him having reinvented himself to a guy who will carry us far come playoffs.

Pure 1-D goal scorers often go ghost come playoffs and fall hard (OV from 2011 to 2017, Kovalchuk, Heatley, Iginla, etc as some examples). A Dominant dual (but more focuses/tilted to playmaking) center/winger end up dominating the playoffs more often (Mack, Kuch, Drai, Crosby, McD)

As poor as he is playing he should at least hit the 24-25, hopefully 30.

His 1 GWG this season is concerning for sure.

I said at the beginning of the season with complete sincerity that I don't care if Matthews only scores 20 goals this season as long as there is playoff success, meaning a Cup.

This is all that matters and I believe for him this is his primary focus this year as well. It's why I think the Four Nations has probably had a lingering effect on him as he was committed and focused on winning and his team came a goal short when it mattered. Obviously he has missed many games or 40 would be likely.

Until this team achieves the ultimate goal, it is going to bother him. We may finally see changes in the offseason if they dont reach their goal this year. We will also see which players REALLY want to be in Toronto. I remember seeing Spezza drop the gloves in the playoffs or one of the final regular season games when the Leafs were losing (Habs maybe?) and it may have lead to him returning for a second year as the Leaf brass saw some fight in him.

Well, there are a few players playing for contracts, we will see who wants it. I'm not talking about fighting, I am referring "having fight" within ones game. The Florida game certainly wasn't a source of encouragement. You don't have to be the most talented, but you have to want it far more than the next guy to the point of an obsession. It's why Michael Jordan has six rings or why Tom Brady has seven.

Nobody will care about his struggles this year if he has a monster playoffs. But it’s crazy he might not even crack 30 this year.

But he likely won't. Complete bust as the leagues highest paid player and as captain thus far..

Remember when people used to think he was a top 3 player in this league?
