So Montour + Dunn + Daccord? No. McDavid isn’t being traded and if he was the Oilers need a 1D and 1 G to start

EDM has been a tire fire for a decade+ now and its criminal the GMing that has been done around McDavid. Thats why he leaves.Frankly I think if McDavid says he isn't going to sign its not to then sign a contract with another team. If he doesn't sign with Edmonton its because he has decided to completely reset the market and go for max dollars, Cup or anything else be damned.
I get its all hypothetical, but even in a hypothetical I can't see a reason why he would leave a team he just went to the SCF and WCF in back to back years. Now if they win in Edmonton this season, maybe he gets a wild hair and decides he wants to bring one to Toronto, but that's the only case that I can even create a maybe where he would do a sign and trade.
Im the OP. Theyre one in the same in this hypothetical universe. He is not re-signing at all in Edm. So they go on one more run with him and lose him for nothing or trade him anytime between now and the 2026 deadline....did you?
Because the hypothetical isn't that McDavid wants out. It's that he won't re-sign *early*. Wanting out and not re-signing early are very different things.
This is the thread right here. Even if McDavid demanded a trade to the Leafs, Matthews holds the cards. Northern Alberta is far from the desert.Yeah Matthews is never waiving for Edmonton in any of the multiverses.
The Leafs can't trade Matthews because he can handpick his destination, thus leaving the Leafs with next to no leverage.
They're not the same thing at all. McDavid not re-signing early and McDavid not re-signing at all are wildly different in terms of how Edmonton proceeds and what the value is like. If McDavid tells Edmonton to pound sand entirely, that might change the game for us. How you had it worded initially made it sound like McDavid wasn't willing to re-sign now, but maybe that's still an option at the end of next year. They're different scenarios.Im the OP. Theyre one in the same in this hypothetical universe. He is not re-signing at all in Edm. So they go on one more run with him and lose him for nothing or trade him anytime between now and the 2026 deadline.
Matthews wont waive for Edm and a lot is centered around McDavid being the savior in TOR, his hometownish, but that may not be a factor for him at all.
I assumed the + wasBefore you lose your minds, this is assuming McDavid says he is not going to re-sign in EDM early after they lose to the Stars this postseason. So Edm then has the decision to go for one more run with McDavid or Rantanen it and move him now before you lose him for nothing potentially. I am also assuming both Tavares and Marner are gone so lots of money to spend and TOR gives McDavid 8x$17 or whatever high amount you want to put here.
Obviously this would break the NHL internet, but what else does TOR have to add, if anything, to Matthews for an extended McDavid (not just a rental). Inserting Matthews into EDM keeps them in contention mode, but can easily argue is a downgrade over McDavid.
Matthews - $13.25 for 3 more years
for
McDavid - Extends with TOR 8 years
Tanev - $2.5M for 5 more years
If I'm Edmonton, I go to other teams and ask for players who don't suck in the playoffs.
Wait, you think that’s NOT terrible for the Oilers?I don’t think that is necessary true.
To Toronto
McDavid
Nurse
Skinner
To Edmonton
Matthews at 10 million
Stolarz
Rielly
Knies
Carlo
1x2
It's easier to stay ppg when the team never advances. There are 15 other players who played 20+ games and have a higher PPG than Matthews over the last 5 years in the playoffs, so there is your list.
