Germany means surgery.

I don't know about that, I've never read that the Germans have superior surgeons to the Americans.

...what they do have however is this type of blood treatment, where they extract some of your blood, enrich it, and pump it back in. That helps with the overall healing process for some chronic ailments. NBA players like Kobe and Lebron and I think Dirk too have done that procedure.

So if I were to speculate, that's what he's probably doing there, possibly for a lingering back injury.

I'm not sure why people are surprised that he's in Germany. Why would the rich guy who constantly flies not hop on a plane to see his specialist?

It's just all very weird. Matthews apparently is slated to be back next week against Florida so all things seem fine... but it's very weird and not typical at all, especially during the season.

If you aren't surprised that his injury required him to go to a different continent for a consult, I dunno what to say.

I think all it tells you is that it likely is a reoccurrence of a prior injury where he sought treatment from this same doctor. I don't think it means the sky is falling. Honestly, a back injury is probably the simplest explanation.

It's a very weird set of events regardless, especially 3 weeks after the fact.

I'm not panicking or stating the sky is falling -- it's just very weird and not typical at all. It raises even more questions.

You're genuinely unsure why fans on this board are surprised that the team's franchise player and captain who is going to be missing at least 3 weeks now, due to a "day-to-day" injury that apparently pre-dates to before the season started, flew to the other side of the world to see a specialist a few weeks into his injury and recovery process?

How often does an athlete do such thing in the midst of a season without there being the possibility that it can turn out to be something serious and/or long-term?

It's not that weird, it's most likely this:

Platelet-rich plasma or PRP therapy is a new, advanced type of treatment that is changing the field of orthopedic medicine. PRP is a concentrated solution obtained from the patient’s own blood that contains a higher concentration of platelets compared to the concentration found in normal blood. Platelets play an important role in the natural healing process of the body by the release of growth factors that can help in stimulating tissue repair and regeneration.

PRP helps in orthopedics by promoting tissue healing, alleviating pain, and reducing inflammation. It helps in faster healing and has a much lower risk compared to other treatment methods.

Germans are the leading experts at this procedure.

Yeah, it's either the PRP or stem cell stuff.

I don't see why it's particularly weird for a rich guy to hop on a plane and go see his specialist who he's previously seen for the injury he just had, when he's not going to be playing for like a week.

"We haven't been trying to be cryptic with all this stuff. We've been calling him day-to day-because that's what he's been. We've looked at the schedule here and what we're trying to do is use this week to hopefully get this thing behind him. As part of that, he and our Doc Forman went over to Germany to see a doc that he's used in the past. More as a general checkup, but also to get some work done on his thing. It's not alarming. It was something we've been discussing, knowing that he's going to be getting this week, but we're hopeful that once we get through the week here, he'll be back up and skating and his return to play would be after that. So again, nothing new. There's been no setbacks. Everything's been actually going quite well. We're just trying to use the days that we've got here with less games being played to just try to get this behind us."

Not sure where people are getting the alarm bells from. Seems people are just upset that he's not saying exactly what it is, but of course he's not.

Yeah... it's not that weird or cause for concern.

That's great that you don't see the big deal but it's not typical and very much a weird set of events that doesn't happen often, especially not in season and where they have said many times he's day to day without any set backs. So people raising an eyebrow on something like this makes sense.

You don't fly all the way to Germany (or anywhere for that matter) for treatment unless whatever doctors here have been trying isn't working.

Beyond that, it's all speculation.
In fact, even my statement is speculation.

Just hope the trip helped and he's close to returning.

Day to day often means minor injury with an uncertain timeline, not going to be back tomorrow. You kind of just see each day how the player heals. Sounds like he's largely healed and they're just taking advantage of the poor scheduling and the fact that we keep winning to be as cautious as possible. Matthews seeing his specialist with a week off after an injury isn't really unusual. Rich people just have more global specialists.

The fundamental problem here isn’t the injury. It’s a lack of transparency which breeds speculation and inconsistent damage control through various channels and erodes public trust.

Your homemade PR campaign and damage control is also based on nothing. The injury could be worse than they let on and you would never know.

The main concern of the Leafs, is and should be winning hockey games. Transparency on an injury, may lead to being targeted by other teams, to expose that weakness, so I'm fine with secrecy.

We aren't entitled to know every detail, and some injuries really don't have set timetabled for healing.

We all need to relax and not be so worked up about this. What's going to be, is going to be.

There are specialist surgeons around the world. There used to be a guy called Sakari Orava in Finland and David Beckham went to have surgery with him. Also several F1 drivers.

Good thing they didn't announce anything. Now other teams won't target the highest paid player in the league...

The Leafs are spending more than half of the salary cap on 5 soft skaters and now we're going to pretend not only that they want to win, but they are worried about them being targeted?

Some folks really do think burying their head in the sand is the most logical thing

Going from day to day and "he'll be back soon" to now requiring specialists from across the globe to treat whatever is going on, while the fanbase has ZERO information on what's even wrong or going on. I mean you really don't need to be that smart to know something serious is going on here.

Get prepared for some worse news in the coming days. It's pretty blatantly obvious why they're keeping secrets, ticket sales are gonna hurt going forward when they announce Matthews is going to be out of a significant about of time.

Day to day, but hasn't skated in 3 weeks, and despite residing in a city with some of the best doctors & hospitals in the world, is 6000 km away.

Totally normal.
