Why the hell would he ever sign in Toronto when there's 31 other teams that will give him a max deal? He knows the second he signs in Toronto that the media and fans will be treating him like Jesus the savior who is destined to break the legendary drought, and if he does anything less than win a cup they will harass the shit out of him.and his family.
Toronto is honestly probably last on his list. Leaf fans pissed away any chance they had at getting him. Good riddance, most entitled fanbase in the league doesn't deserve a player of his caliber.

Not even close man. Marner & Matthews are divas that act like immature babies while also demanding max money with nothing to show for it. This is also a long time coming, fans are just getting tired of it all.
McDavid would not get the same treatment especially not right away. He has a completely different personality & actually delivers results when it matters most. Toronto would worship the ground he walks on

You're bringing up guys from 20-30 years ago. Before social media. The Leafs media has gotten just ridiculous since then. It's always been bad but with social media it's 10x worse now. And the fanbase feeds off of it.
Toronto is a good place to live, but the franchise and media have been a mess for decades. You had Ballard losng intentionally, then there were a bunch of old school guys, and the media still reveres those guys.
Dubas and others blew up the old school crowd, but they went too far the other way. The whole team was built based directly on newer stats, those stats are mostly available for the regular season and not the playoffs, so they have a great regular season team. NHL playoffs are sufficiently different from the regular season that it is unlikely building a team that way will lead to playoff success.
Most teams use advanced stats. Good teams correct for the playoffs. Old school teams ignore them altogether and let some ex-player go with his gut contributing to no cups in Canada since ‘93.
The Leafs are adjusting, but in long series teams succeed in shutting down their top line. They need to go less top heavy. They’ve already done better at ignoring local media views, and that’s good because those views are way, way off.
We’ll see if they keep the right guys.

Yeah those two are absolute legends of the game. Kessel excelled against third line matchups for Pittsburgh while collecting a first line salary.

Nobody is disputing that McDavid would handle the pressure better. That's not the point. The point is he has no reason to play in that market and invite that pressure onto himself.
He already plays in Edmonton my guy, do you think they don't give a f*** about hockey there? He already plays in a city where he's worshipped. If that's what's important to him then he'll just stay with the Oilers where he'll be worshiprd but he won't have people wishing death on his child or beer thrown at him during a playoff game or be robbed at gunpoint if he fails to meet expectations.
Keep thinking Toronto fans can act like psycho classless goons and that top tier players will still be lining up to play for them.
Pretty piss poorr excuse. There is several cities who media are pretty on par with Toronto, pretty much every Canadian team, the rest of the original 6 no doubt and you could probably hand pick a few others that get run rapid thru the media and fan base .....

You just proved the point. Those two guys were hated because moron Leaf fans and moron Leaf media put unrealistic expectations on them, and then lost their shit at them when they inevitably failed to meet those expectations.
When they were traded they both immediately found success with realistic expectations and became fan favorites with their new teams. They faced each other in the conference finals with Kessel in a support scoring role and Phaneuf as a 2nd pair dman.
There is literally a video of it happening to McDavid last playoffs by a group of drunk fans in the parking lot of a local liquor store. He still went on to win the Smythe. You are making excuses.
You are infantilizing a grown ass man for no apparent reason. Make it make sense.
They were paid like first line players. Much like the fab 4 are paid like superstars.

Their current situation is a mix of 1) being the largest hockey market in the world, 2) Their local and national media propping up their status as contenders without actually contending for anything 3) Assuming they will do something without actually doing it 4) Having loud and passionate fans 5) Their top 5 players being the most overpaid group of 5 players in the league.
Some of those are created by the team, some are created by the media, and some are created by the fans. The moment they have risk of losing, the mental weakness creeps in at all mediums and attacks the team. The team doesn't believe, the media doesn't believe, the fans dont believe. If they lose 2 games in a row in a best of 7, everyone already assumes they will lose. That's a problem

I don't know how many times I have to say it before you get it through your cranium: I am not making excuses for the Leaf players losing. The fact of the matter is they're not good enough.
I am blaming the fans for being so angry because they're the ones who placed these lofty ass expectations on these players in the first place. Matthews is closer to McDavid than we think. Marner is a Selke caliber 100 point winger. Neither of these statements were ever true, but Leaf fans and media convinced themselves that they were, and now they're pissed at the players for not being these HOF caliber demons they thought they were. It's just pure stupidity from the fanbase and media, acting like they're a top contender and entitled to a cup every year, when the reality is just there are better teams and better players than the Leafs out there.
You can't replace the fans, so you have to replace the players.

Meh I think that's a poor way to look at it and if the players in Toronto think about it this way I think they're having a poor attitude about it. From reading these threads it sounds like if you embrace all that goes with being a player in Toronto that it can be a great experience for them. Right away you have to understand that the pressure is there to win no matter where you are because you are in a professional league and the goal is to win the cup. The better argument as a player to whether you can help a team do that will help you get paid. If not by them some other team. That is just pressure of being in the league I think. What fans do or don't do doesn't matter.
However this is also one of the fan bases that really supports their team and loves them. If you embrace that part of it and understand that this isn't a place you can quietly go out to dinner without people knowing who you are and yes I'm sure that can be tiring but its something again you embrace and if you have a good attitude about it probably can also be really fun. From some fans pov its probably a privilege to play there.
So I think people probably including players there are not looking at this the way that I think would most benefit them. And then there's always its just not something you can do and need to play somewhere else. Which is fine too but like anywhere you play in the league there's plus and minus for where it is but wow you are in the NHL. Embrace and enjoy the hell out of it. Maximize that sob. Including the experience with the fans if you are able to. Many careers don't last too long. The you see ex players do media and I think that seems fun too it probably goes to guys who are interested but also can be worked with in that way and that's part of what goes into the being a professional in the NHL i think if your able to can get those jobs later.

They only make 10s of millions, are extremely popular, hang out with superstars, have beautiful women/wives, own whatever they want, live the dream 99.9999% of men want.
