I think that Rossi's contract will be a good indication of what Knies will get. There is no doubt that there will be inflation due to rising cap, but paying more than 7M/yr for Knies strikes me as unwise... maybe if they lock him down for 8x8M?

He strikes me as a middle six power forward who's stats are being inflated because of who he plays with. You want guys like him on your team, but not if you have to overpay for him.

I love Knies and he's pacing 30 goals and 55 points with Matthews and Marner. But take him off that line and he's probably closer to 20-25 goals and 45 points. If some team offered him 9 million I would laugh my ass off. I think he's a dominant power forward and clutch, but he's defintley worth closer to 6-7 million. I'd give 7 years, 7 million per as my max offer if we're getting term. If it's a shorter term deal, it should be closer to 6.5.

The Leafs should offer him something similar to Slaf. They have similar production this year but Slaf signed with a lower max cap but is also younger/more room for growth, yoh could argue those offset. 8 year 7.5 million.

Toronto would match any compensation under a 1st for Knies. They were already talking about ~5M long-term before the season started (which is over a 1st).

I doubt teams are lining up to offersheet away an unconditional 1st round pick in the Gavin McKenna draft given he's putting up Crosby numbers in his draft -1 season.

If I'm the Leafs and any team is throwing you an unconditional first in the McKenna draft, you seriously consider not matching. An unconditional first is incredibly valuable, you rarely see it ever traded. Nearly all 1sts are protected to avoid the team winning the lottery - let alone in a draft where the player probably sweeps 1st overall the year before he's even eligible.

His obvious comp is Boldy and Knies hasn't done enough to make as much as him at $7. Knies is an obvious bridge deal at $5-5.5x3.

I can also see a world where both parties are happy with $7x8 with rising cap and all.

I think they would but most of these teams dont meet the qualifcations for what it would take. Anything over 6.8 a year only Buffalo Chicago Montreal Nashville Montreal NYI Philly and Utah can do.

I understand the cap is going up but Knies is not a play driver and his numbers are certainly inflated by his line mates. He’s a guy you’d love to have on your team but he’s not someone you make one of the highest paid on your team.

I cannot imagine that Nick Robertson will be a Leaf next year. Continues to be bounced in and out of the lineup, and hopefully they'll leave a spot for Cowan to make the jump.
