Matthew Knies has arrived. Hat trick night!

He’s a really good hockey player, his progression is impressive, and he’s gonna cost an arm and a leg now because of it.

I can see him getting around 9m x 8 type deal, which certainly means marner is gone, which most people are expecting anyway
I don't mind committing long term to a player like this tbh he is a unicorn in the modern game. I would try and get it to like 8-8.5 over 8 years but end of the day you need to keep the guy.

How on earth he was a 2nd round pick I will never know but I thank the hockey gods it happened. This guy established himself as the next great power forward in the league this year. Unreal.

Remember when some guy on HFBoards was saying it would've been smart of him to take 8 x $4M - $5M earlier this year?

Do you understand your GMs overpaying players that fold in the playoffs?
Pay Marner that 13.5 mil
Pay Tavares that 7 mil

I mean yeah, Dubas set the Leafs up terribly for cap structure and it appears to have bled over into the Treliving era...

... But when you get a player like Knies you pay them. Everybody wants a Top 6 power forward who can score and few teams have them anymore. They're a dying breed.

It was a heartbreaking loss. The man hates Florida

As one does.

I am honestly fine with Knies replacing Marner. It is similar to an internal Huberdeau > Tkachuk. One thing fans complain about is the core are all the same type of player. Knies is different and adds a lot.

And what game was that?

The Golden Gophers reached the national championship game at the 2023 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey tournament, but ultimately were defeated by the Quinnipiac Bobcats in overtime.

Except Knies is the opposite of folding in the playoffs based on the 3 playoff series we have seen.

Once again, I said the Leafs would be smart to offer him a pile of money at a lower AAV early this year before he proved himself.

Have nothing against Knies.
It's the other 4 overpaid ballerinas I laugh at.

Yeeeaaahhhh this is only half the story.

Multiple people pointed out that Knies would never sign a deal like that, and you tried explaining why he would/should.

Knies is the guy the Leafs should build their forward core around, he is actually built for the playoffs unlike the others

Unless you just woke up from a coma you would know the entire makeup of Toronto is changing this offseason unless they win a cup basically so.. Not like they are keeping this salary cap. Most likely Knies replaced Marner

No, I said there were examples all over the league of young players taking the guaranteed money.

He’s a great player. No doubt he plays on a great line but he adds a new dimension the Leafs were lacking and I think he’s a guy who is going to profile as a very good post-season player as he gains more experience and responsibility.

He’s a natural scorer…while 19.6% shooting is high and will end up being a touch higher than a career average - it’s not like he’s shooting 25%. This won’t be the only season he’s around that mark and he’s got the capacity to be relied upon more as a trigger man in the future rather than an opportunistic “connector” which is basically what he’s been this year (Bobby McMann has more shots on goal, for example). I think he’s a regular 35-40 goal type scorer as he becomes more assertive with development, a power forward with the ability to play in the pace and transition of a high-tempo offense. There aren’t a ton of guys like that.

Toronto would do well to make him a piece to build around. He's good enough that if they devote the money Marner would have gotten to filling out the forward depth this offseason, they will be a better lineup next season, especially in the playoffs when depth kills.

Bobby McMann is an interesting comp mostly because on paper they are pretty similar. Huge body that can skate and shoot. But McMann is more of a rush player who isn't afraid to drive the net and that is why he has more shots.

Knies is most comfortable gobbling up pucks around the net and jamming them into the goalie until they go in

Bulllshit, Brad will move out Kampf and Jarnkrok to re-sign Tavares and Marner and keep the circus going...

This era of the Core 4 will go down as one of the worst ever in modern era for playoff success.

They'd shoot their own dick off if they signed Marner before getting Knies dealt with.

Teams would be lining up to put an offer sheet on a 23 year old PWF with a team that doesn't have the cap to match.

So the answer is you don’t know how contracts and salary cap works. You’re ignorant and just as fast as your team became a winner it can go south pretty fast. Look at Chicago, Pitts and other champs that fell off. You might be there again very soon.
