Matthew Knies, do not trade this kid.

Gopher fan here.. You guys are going to get what you are lacking. Top 6 power forward with a nose for the net!
He definitely plays a style of game that Leafs could really use, and add qualities the team lacks overall in many ways.

Curious if you saw an improvement in his game from last year to this year?

He was a PPG player in 2021-22 with 33 points in 33 games and this year despite the Gophers adding some high-end talent and former 1st rounders in Logan Cooley and Jimmy Snuggerud among others as they go for an National championship he seems to be going along at a similar point per game pace as last year. While a pair of former 2nd round NHL drafted Minnesota Dmen Jackson LaCombe & Brock Faber are pilling up the points and getting Hobey Baker recognition the highly regarded forwards not so much.

The expectation going into the season was a big offensive leap in his 2nd year particularly with all the new additions to U of Minnesota roster for Knies.

Definitely have seen improvement. Gophers have probably 12 guys on the roster that will be in the NHL within the next 3 years. So to that point it’s sort of community scoring with everyone having good numbers. Knies leads the conference in goals and is top 5-6 in the country.

Definitely think he’ll score 30-35 goals a few times in the NHL.

He almost reminds me of a combination of John LeClair and Matt Boldy.

Not getting my hopes up that he'll ever sign a contract with the Leafs, until I see it in writing. He could go back into the draft or wait it out for UFA. I sure hope he signs soon before that risk develops.

Thank you for the update.

I like the John LeClair comparable in size, strength, powerforward type and you're certainly correct on adding tangible and intangible qualities to make a team better, and the kind of style of player capable of 30 goal seasons.

I'd suspect as the trade deadline approaches that his name will be mentioned often by other GMs in trade talks trying to pry him away from Toronto.

As a college player he can't sign just anytime unlike CHL players as it would end his college eligibility. If I'm not mistaken.

The only time you will hear about a potential signing is after his NCAA season ends, and he is ready to turn pro. Once he signs that NHL contract he is no longer allowed to return to college thereafter.

Button said he would do Knies for Crouse in a heartbeat. Not sure whether either team does. Crouse has put up better numbers each year. 20g last year and 16 in 43 so far.

Button can eat my shorts after Rugby practice
Knies is bigger already than Crouse and 5 years younger.
Knies will get stronger and bigger 6'3" 225/230 will be his playing size
His style is physical power forward and gets better when it matters, reminds me John Tonilli from the Islanders years ago

Craig Button is the last person I would listen to on trade ideas or Hockey advice in general.

Last season he voted Matthews 5th for the Hart Trophy.

Another aspect of his skill set that sets him apart is on the defensive side of the puck. He’s very aggressive on take aways and uses his big frame to shield the puck to keep possession so I can see him potentially being a very good penalty killer down the road. Also Craig button is a windbag.

Knies looks like he will be a beauty. The only thing is that we don't know how far away he is from being a finished product whereas Crouse is today and we are trying to win now. I'd be hesitant to make that trade with the Bruins looking like world beaters and Tampa being Tampa, especially if they load up at the TDL. Only way Leafs make that trade is if they think Crouse puts them over the top and I don't think he does.

Knies’ name will keep being thrown around by so-called “insiders” until the TDL passes. He’s the Leafs best prospect so any mention of him will drive clicks and views.

Which is crazy because prospects at his level are almost never traded at the tdl by any objective look at the history of the deadline.

Media types dropping his name are doing nothing more than a cynical attempt to grab clicks/likes/views

It is all relative but he is a point a game playing against university players. His linemates are Snuggerud and Cooley.
I personally thought he would be producing at a higher scoring rate given his situation. He is 24 points in 24 games.

Using a guy like Adam Gaudette as an example. He is a fringe NHL player but had 60 points and 30 goals in 38 games his last year of University play.
Who is going to be the better player NHL player. Stats say Gaudette, our hopes say Knies.

A couple things to contextualize and to point out why you're off using those stats as an example

Gaudette was playing in a D2 team which is a considerable step down from Knies who playing in a D1 team as part of the Big 10.

Knies goal scoring per game has already taken a big jump - and he also happens to lead all big 10 players.

All this. No idea why this poster is fighting so hard to make Knies look like a middling prospect.
