Player Discussion Matthew Knies | Built for the Playoffs

Say we get the #2

Who are we picking?
Unpopular opinion but if we got the 2 and I was in charge I’m trading down.
The 2 clear best players in this draft are undersized LW.
You can definitely make 1 of those work in a lineup. I’m not trying to build a contender around 2 of them. Especially without our first till 2029.

So here's some news I heard from my old man within the last hour. I didn't ask where he got it from.

My old man says Knies knows Josh and Shane Doan and knows what they know about Chayka and wants nothing to do with Chayka.

I know Knies is from Arizona, I'll go look this up for myself but does anyone here know of a connection between the Doans and Knies?

EDIT: This is what I was able to find, seems like my old man has a few farts in the underwear. Will he shit himself?

My old man know Knies and says he wants to stay in Toronto and win the cup

Cool, thank you

They're not?!
I want one of them to come out and say they're not moving him. I just don't think it's good for team culture to let this stuff play out in public when a player is trying to sort his shit out for the upcoming season, IF it's a guy they want and think they can win with. Knies is 23, what good is there in him hearing he's being moved every day for a month now. Let him focus on his off season and getting ready for the new coach and team. He played injured last year, are we 100% he's finish with any rehab? It just seems to go against a winning culture to let your young players have to question their future the ENTIRE offseason so far.

The only ones "wanting" to move him is every single "hockey analyst" and twitter guy, and fans of every single team other than the leafs.
And they want that to happen is so they can make click bait posts on how the leafs lost the trade and let someone like Knies go.

It doesn't fill a particular need but I think it has to be Stenberg. If he and McKenna are as advertised you go from needing centers good enough to drive your lines to just needing pretty good centers. I value a #1 D more than a sniping winger and I am sure there will be two or three of those D going top 10 but the floor for Sten and McKenna seems higher than the D options. Its a weird build formula but there have been a bunch of wingers who have carried their lines over the years.
You can also argue that a high end W has a greater chance of having positive impact this year than a similarly talented D. D generally takes longer to mature in the NHL. If the goal is to be competitive this year, going to Stenberg over Reid does make sense.

"If they’re going to move Knies, it’s going to be for a true haul. Or they’re going to have to soften the ask to get into the Top 10".

What does this even mean?
It means Chayka is going to start turning into the draft prospects with his dilly dallying and giving people too much time to analyze and his stock is going to drop as they find stuff to nitpick?

On a more serious note it probably means if they want back into the top 10 there are offers there for the pick and maybe a player or prospect for Knies, but not the pick+top player+top prospect+

That's right

Scoring another top 5 pick for Knies plus prospect (like a young 2C) is the way to go IMO. That doesn’t mean you can’t still try to win with the current core of Matthews/Nylander/Tavares/Raddysh/Stolarz(if being kept) while grooming the next core with actual NHL talent and not starting from scorched earth. It’s the same way Pastrnak and McAvoy learned from Bergeron/Marchand/etc. when coming into the league. Actual NHL talent to back up the learning process. This is the way to go IMO.
Agree 100%, that's exactly what I'd be after. Two young assets, one with huge upside that we think can develop into a #1 Dman to anchor our blueline and who's prime years align with McKenna's, and the other who we think will become a top 6 centre.

Good question, I have no idea. The number of people who have trouble writing a sentence that people can understand seems to be growing rapidly.

Yep, looks like these guys in a Buffalo basement cracked the code.

Why do a lot of people think trading Knies is a mistake? If he nets us a top pairing d-man and/or 2nd line center along with a blue chip prospect and a high draft pick, why is this so bad?

You have to give to get. Chayka said there are still significant moves to make. We have no other assets that would net us an impressive haul. No one is going to just give Toronto their best assets for our garbage. Our defence is still GARBAGE even with the addition of Raddysh.

Knies is close with the Doans though, I personally won't be writing this off because this is easily IMO the thing that makes the most sense with all of this trade talk.

It makes no sense to trade a guy who, if he got Brady Tkachuk SOGs is a 40-50 goal scorer who's 230+ and is in the top 1/3 of league forwards for speed while being injured. It makes no sense to let this trade talk wreck his off-season and every day he's gotta worry about potentially packing his shit up and moving, from a culture standpoint. They drafted and developed the guy, he plays hurt, he comes back pretty damn quickly from supposed concussions, seems to want to play badly enough for them to play hurt for them. So what kind of place do they want the Leafs to be for young players if this is how they are going to let them spend their offseasons?

Sundin IMO isn't doing what he's suppose to be there to do, fix the culture. Letting Knies rot in the media every day isn't fixing the culture, it's making Toronto a shitty place to play. Sundin came in "I know the media here" blah blah blah, then go stand in front of the cameras and say something and end this poor fellow's suffering. Or trade him, right f***ing now.

I guess cause most fans would prefer to move Willy or Auston based on the limited playoff success, age etc.
