Player Discussion Matthew Knies | Built for the Playoffs

If I am him, im taking a 2/3 year deal and then hitting a home run next contract
He can hit that home run now on a long term deal. How bad could a front loaded 9m x 8 years be for him? I think his camp would have used Nylander’s rfa deal as their comparable. It’s all about internal comparables in Toronto. If I’m not mistaken, Nylander’s rfa deal would equate to about 9m x 6 years. I wouldn’t surprised if Knies deal is very similar.

Can't see them giving him 9 just yet, but i might be wrong

Is anyone else at least a little worried about an offer sheet? I know he said all the right things. But theres so much money available this offseason and so little talent to be had. I think St. Louis really opened Pandora's box last year with Holloway and Broberg.

A 5y $9.3m contract would only cost a team a 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Thats still an easy match as I dont think he's overpaid at that hit.

But an $11.7m cap hit would cost a team 2x 1sts, a 2nd & 3rd. That would make things awfully uncomfortable for the Leafs. Looking at some (near) playoff teams that have the space like LA, Carolina, Minnesota, Montreal, or Columbus.. sure you overpay the player but those mid/late draft picks don't hold much value in relation to Knies. Carolina or Montreal especially would I'm sure like to make things difficult for Toronto

There's only one team in the league I think would be dumb enough to give Knies $11M.... unfortunately it's the Leafs.

Knies is a good player. In fact he's my favourite player on the team. But that doesn't mean he's worth as much as a forty goal scoring one hundred point winger.

I wouldn't worry too much about an offer sheet.

St. Louis was a unique situation because they were able to take advantage of Edmonton's cap mismanagement to walk away with two good players. The Leafs will have ample cap space to match any reasonable offer sheets. On the other hand If someone wants to pay Knies $11M+ have at it.

The compensation is worth more than the Leafs could get in a trade.

I hope someone in the Atlantic did it. Because the team that did that would never be a contender. They'd handcuff their payroll and throw away their best draft and trade capital all in one shot.

Too bad the Leafs are the only team in the NHL dumb enough to do something like that.

Isn't 10.43 mil just a 1st and a 2nd?

That sounds like worse case scenario for me. I'd rather have Knies than a 1st and a 2nd, but he's not close to 10.43 mil. Even at 9.43 mil I'm still very eh about it.
