I still dont understand why Tree was looking to trade Knies...if Knies didnt request it.

Its like Tree knew he was going out, so he figured might as well go out with a bang and push all the chips in.

I started to dig into Trelivings history and was surprised to see he was an ECHL player and AHL player and racked up quite a bit of PIM.

Video of him when he was a player.

I have a hard time seeing Reinbacher reach his potential.

He's been injury plagued since being drafted. The most crucial years of his development derailed. His numbers in the AHL this year were good but not great.

If he was the best player in that trade it would have been hard to justify.

Knies is a great player. Throwing him away for a handful of lottery tickets doesn't make sense. Then they would have to hope to draft another player just like Knies.

A high scoring power forward is a must have on a hockey team.

Someone who will dig in the the corners and lay out a hit. But who can still slam the puck into the back of the net and make a great play. A physical specimen who embodies everything a hockey player should be.

That's Knies.

Simmons says any report of trading Knies at the deadline us 100% fakse. No such deal was in the works.
I for one believe Simmons, not Pagnotta who is trying to get attention.

Dreger said that a lot of league executives are expecting Knies to be traded. Would be a mistake IMO unless we're getting a legitimate 1D who still has some years left.

Knies' contract was already a steal, with the rising cap, he has insane value

Chayka's penchant for making trades and the unfortunate yet persistent chatter regarding Knies probably shouldn't surprise me at this point. Just hope there's a method to any movement and not simply a desire to create excitement or headlines.

IF and I mean big IF, this Knies chatter is true then you’d think there must be a reason why two different GMs would both be exploring moving this player.

That said, I don’t believe it to be true.

Chayka’s own comments on Knies don’t really lead you to think that’s a guy he’s in a hurry to move.

I’m not moving him for anything less than a young top pairing D

Please dont move Knies. I have waited my entire life for the leafs to have a young, high skill power forward during their prime. He looks like part of the solution, not the problem

Trade one of the best things on the team going forward with Kenna long term for what? Dealing him makes little sense and needs to be a massive overpay. Even then, find me another Knies.

Thought process seems to be, McKenna/Cowan slot in as the top 2 LW, we have a surplus of wingers and Knies has extremely high value and would net the biggest return.

Like hypothetically, if Werenski had 1 year left and he's eligible for an extension, I would absolutely be trying to trade for him, even if it meant Knies going the other way.

But that's the kind of player I would target, don't settle for anything less. We look like we're ok on goaltending and scoring forwards, we have not had a true 1D since as long as I can remember.

Is a player like that even available though ? I don't know.

Knies is a elite, top line power forward, on an insane contract. His contract is only going to be 6% of the cap for the 2027-2028 season.

There was a lot of chatter for Chicago's 4th overall pick. I know this isn't likely to happen, but If at the last minute Chicago offers you Levshunov and the 4th overall pick for Knies, would you not take that deal and run?

Knies is literally the only Leafs skill forward that actually forecheck.

They are probably more willing to part with Cowan than Knies.

Knies have no trade protections, that is why he is rumoured to be on the move. Would be stupid to move him imo. Age, contract, style and personality scream corner stone to me. But he have no trade protection and could land is either a good top 4 D-man/top pairing even or a couple of youngsters who could develop into those roles.
Who or what else do we have that can be moved to anyone and bring back something or real value?
But I would hate it but I would understand it.

I'd do it for the #4 and Rinzel. I doubt Chicago gives up Levshunov this soon. Rinzel would become arguably our top D prospect ahead of Danford. If they then drafted Carson Carels (or another highly touted D) at #4 on top of that, we'd have a really solid trifecta of young D-men in the pipeline and suddenly not so grim.

Or, if Stenberg were available, we could get a top forward prospect to go with a promising D-prospect in Rinzel.

I really don't want to move Knies but if Chicago somehow offered 4th overall + Rinzel + Lardis or something excessive, I think you have to consider it. Walking away with McKenna + Stenberg or one of Reid/Carels/Smits/Verhoeff would be pretty good.

This.

I don’t get the Knies unicorn BS.

He’s a really good player, on a good contract - but not at a position of need. Winger - and we are loaded at LW.

One of Knies, Cowan or McKenna need to be shopped to help at D or C. Obviously, it’s not gonna be McKenna. Knies makes the most sense to me - but you can’t miss on the trade or we are really effed.
If you can get another team to see the same unicorn and give up a top quality, age appropriate D, go for it. I like Knies but IMO even he is missing more fire in his game for the package he has.

Can we change the title to "Matthews Knies | Underperforming in the Playoffs"?

I have no clue how people complain about playoff performances and then go along with threads like this.

The kind of returns that have been rumoured for Knies... take it and run.

Good player, widely overrated.
