Yeah, obviously it can always be worse, especially with our budget and challenges. it is just really hard to judge how bad this is too when we're making some very challenging decisions elsewhere on other players and then we're splurging on a risk like this, ya know?

Maybe our budget is much higher than we know and maybe this is not a big deal at all....but then why are were nickel and diming elsewhere?

I think it's more of an optics thing rather then anything. I had my buddy asking me whether I felt the Josh Anderson extension was an overpayment by Montreal. Realistically I wouldn't have wanted to pay him that much but when you trade for a guy your hand is forced. As far as goalies go I think $6.5 mil is reasonable for a guy you're hoping to have be your starter. I don't think a goalie shuold ever be getting $7.5 mil+ because there are so many other variables that decide how good a goalie is. Murray has shown he's capable of being a high-end but he also just had a very rough season for many reasons (I personally think the change of scenery will help). If he can rebound and even become average I think the money isn't crazy. I feel you on the cheapness but this contract isn't too bad right now. If two years down the line we have to trade a good, young player because we're using the money on Murray then I'm not happy.

The forwards need help too....Craig Smith is a nice hard working player and all,but we have enough middle/bottom 6 guys...We need legit top 6 help

Stuetzle, Batherson, Norris/L.Brown.

That's our top 6 help. The expectation for each of those guys next year should be 45+ points.

Batherson is 22. Brown is 22. Norris 21. Stuetzle is a top-3 pick, top-2 in pretty much every other year.

45+ points and top 6 minutes is a realistic expectation for all of those guys.

If they can't deliver (moreso Batherson, Brown and Norris than Stuetzle), they're no as good prospects as we think they are.

Don't we have outstanding goaltending coaching in Ottawa? Feels like a good fit when you get someone with Murray's pedigree and skill level.
I'm usually very negative on here, but i feel very optimistic that Murray can bounce back and be a very good goalie for us.
Coaching on top of him clearing his head and generally being very happy to be in Ottawa will factor in he just needs to stay healthy that's the question mark.

Hall put 42 points in 65 games in his rookie year. Stuetzle can do that.
Eberle, at the same age as Batherson and Brown will be next year, put up 76 points. The year before he had 43 points in 69 games.

They weren't the problem. They delivered.

They are all still kids, and we have given support to every other core position ...Shouldnt the forwards get some help too??

Sounds like a good deal for a 2 time stanley cup champion with good stats in the playoffs
Gives time for Sogard and Mandolese to develop

Tkachuk, Tierney, White, Anisimov and Brown are all here. Adding a guy like Smith would be great.

Is that playoff calibre? For sure no.

But that's not the goal next year. They're good enough for us to start seeing some improvement as we introduce the young guys.

Goalies are the hardest hockey players to "predict"

There's a recurring theme for any professional athlete though : injuries

Murray will have to stay healthy to be able to earn his contract so that's the basic first thing you need for any player. I don't want to name any other player to not bring bad luck but injury trouble could happen to anybody.

It really could go either way with this contract but I think some posters don't realize how absolutely Elite this guy was at the moment he turned pro. He had a bit of a down year after winning his 2nd Cup in his first 2 NHL seasons but seriously, the Pens were dead tired after 2 very long and hard playoffs run. He bounced back very nicely in 2018-19 but then had other major issues like injury and grief in 2019-20.

Let's see to what level he can bounce back.

I thought contracts were gonna be lower cuz COVID

Lower for depht players, unproven players and players that have to prove themselves again.

But even for hardly sought after players, you're going to see a bit less term and/or dollars than usual.

This is huge, and people are quick to forget how that could really ruin a person's life.

It takes years to recover from tragedy. Actually, you never really recover, you can only learn to live with grief.

To me our only legit top 6 last year were Duclair and Tkachuk, it's possible Stutzle, Norris and Batherson can take a top 6 role this year, maybe even Colin White or Logan Brown i just don't know how realistic it is.

Seems like an overpayment, but who the hell cares when you're never going to be spending anything close to the cap?

We will see soon enough if this was a good deal or not. If he sucks like he did with the Pens at least we have Hogberg. Something tells me though he will be really good for us.
