Biggest concern here is his concussion history. This team should take risks, but I don't know if this is it.

Greif issues?

Concussions?

Playstyle change?

Glove hand issues?

Bad defense in front of him?

So many ifs and buts. I know we have to take risks sometimes. I feel the same way about this contract as I did the Bobby Ryan contract.

Obviously different situations and obviously the Bobby Ryan trade was much more controversial, but I just feel like he can't live up to is and it will eventually cause issues. I hope I'm wrong, but I think we'll be buying him out in year 3.

I can guarantee you that Chabot and Tkachuk have a lot more confidence in the mid-term prospects of this organization knowing they'll have Matt Murray in nets instead of Marcus Hogberg.

This is good. After 3 years of tire-fire and tear-down, it signals to our players, and potential acquisitions, that we're actually thinking of becoming a good team.

Every contract has risk, and nothing is a sure thing. 4 years is perfect term to try and mitigate that, IMO.
I guarantee that Murray will get instant respect the first time he shows his Stanley Cup rings to the boys!

I get what you mean but out of all the goalies we could have gotten he really was the best option. I'd much rather be paying a 26 year old goalie this money over a guy like Kuemper who's probably maxed out his development. Even if Murray becomes and average starter, moving him on a $6.25 mil contract won't be impossible. Considering what the alternatives were our mission to find a new starting goalie could have ended a lot worse.
Yeah, obviously it can always be worse, especially with our budget and challenges. it is just really hard to judge how bad this is too when we're making some very challenging decisions elsewhere on other players and then we're splurging on a risk like this, ya know?

Maybe our budget is much higher than we know and maybe this is not a big deal at all....but then why are were nickel and diming elsewhere?

Too much money and term, but if he finds his form again, it could then look like a steal. Impossible to say which way it'll go at this point, especially in the first few years.

So sign Tkachuk. Dorion said he couldn’t because of Covid, start date, cap floor, revenue and a million other reasons but Murray gets overpaid 2 days after he gets here.

is this all part of the plan? What is the plan anyways?

Dollars are fine. I mean, we all know we won’t be at the cap anytime soon so I suppose it’s all dependent on how much money they’re comfortable spending.

Term isn’t bad. Would have preferred a bit shorter but it’s not bad.

I’m good with this. Fair play. Lets hope he can find his game again.

Murray will have to be more consistent that he has been recently but if he can get close to his 2015-17 or 2018-19 levels, he's totally worth that money, and more. He had GSAA levels of the elite goalies.

It's not a bad thing to have a proven N.1 for the next 4 years, less pressure on all the younger goalies and it gives them more time. By that time, you hope that a guy like Sogaard or Mandolese emerges (or even that Finnish guy). In the meantime, Hogberg, Daccord and then Gustavsson will battle to prove their worth.

Backloaded contract because Melnyk doesn’t expect to be here in two years? :sarcasm:

The % of Sens fans hoping for that must be very high

I don't like paying for what a player used to be.

Only 26 y/o though and was great in 2018-19 which is very recent

This is one of the best things Dorion has done as GM and I’ve now jumped on board his vision... I’m interested to see how his vision pans out

Interesting but can you develop on what you think his vision is?

Chabot did. It’s what corner stone players do. Offer him 8 x $8, but don’t give me the excuse there’s a million reasons not to sign Tkachuk but you’ve got money for Matt Murray

There's about six who make around the same or less who are better.

But I get that salaries generally move up.

Yeah, a lot of those were signed a while ago. Plus only 3 of those guys won cups, one of them being Binnington who had no proven track record other than the one season

You’re not understanding. Tkachuk has no reason himself to sign now if he thinks he’ll have a better year than last year + the league may look better financially in a year. I didn’t say the team wouldn’t or shouldn’t want to sign him now

Oof, that's a hefty contract.

I'd expect less term or less dollars, oh well.

At least we got him signed. I was worried he was going to walk, after we gave away a prospect and a pick. Maybe slightly overvalued, but he does have a Stanley Cup and is worth it for the most part.
