Torts mentioned Zooks 3 penalties (while callling Zooks smart) but somebody should let Torts know Zooks was not actually the guy that hit the guy. It was Stepans stick. Zooks deserved 2 penalties not 3.

Surprised Torts didn't tie him to the bench next to Kreids

When the team is on fire, don't put it out.

Zucc was involved in the play that led to a shorthanded goal which changed the momentum, he's a good playmaker, useless on the bench though.

But he was a little overexcited last night, and his stick went in all directions. This he needs to control better. Torts said they forgot to tell him about the new hand on the puck rule, can't blame him for the third penalty.

Poor Zooks. He gets blamed even when it was Steps stick that was responsible for one of the high sticking penalties not his.

He never said they forgot to tell him, he said no one told him. There are rule changes in the NHL almost every year, he should have done the research himself.

It is however not a big deal. Even Torts was laughing about it.

I disagree. First of all it's a coach job to make sure they play according to the rules. Second, Zucc came from Russia a week ago, and almost immediately went into the lineup. He should've been informed about stuff like that.

And his penalties was actually a big deal, his own fault or not. If the Jets scored while he spent 6 minutes in the box we would've had another story today. Zucc did a lot of good things in the game, but Hank and the team also worked hard to save his little butt. He was grateful for that.

When adding up, it was a great team effort last night that led to a win, now they must continue with this kind of play :)

4 penalty minutes Zooks deserved but you can not actually blame Zooks for taking a high sticking penalty when it was actually Stepans stick that hit the guy.

This. Step's stick came up and hit the player right before Zucc's stick came up and missed.
Anyway, this discussion of "what if" makes no sense. What if he has scored 5 goals last night?
Most surprising thing was how Tort's "forgave" the penalties and let Mats go back out there and play his game. I never would have thought that would be the case.
Seems MZA is a Tort's kind of guy after all, despite all the posters claiming how much Torts hated him last year.

Mistakes aside, pretty much our most creative player. He makes things happen. That is big when you are discussing the New York Rangers. Has helped two star head cases find their game. I'd say that's a net plus in the credit column. This coming from someone who has serious doubts about Zucc's longterm NHL outlook. I'm buying this guys stock right now. I think it's going up.

He surely has improved. I'll take crow for that. Thought it was a dumb idea to bring him back, but it was worth a shot with this squad. He looked very comfortable last night.

Props to Torts too for not benching him after his penalties.

Look, I've been pleasantly surprised with his first couple of games, but hes getting way too much credit considering he and his linemates have yet to produce anything. I'd like to say I'm glad hes made Richards and Gaborik "look better," but - through no fault of Zuccarello - this team is well beyond the point of moral victories.

Amen to that.

How come you and I never jump to conclusions on players who have played a handful of games ? Seems like the thing to do.

A lot of people have no idea why the Rangers asked him to return.

Torts: "Alright Zuke, you're here to improve on our offense, so I'll give you heavy minutes. But if you have 3 penalties in a game you're outta here" HAHA

It was an accident based on wrong ref call and lack of information. I believe we'll never see Zucc add 6 penalty minutes in one game again. Remember he only had 2 during his entire stay last time.

I think people are just starved for exciting hockey. Zucc is a fun player to watch on a team that plays incredibly boring hockey.

Totally agree.

First penalty wrong - It was Stepans stick
Second penalty - correct call
Third penalty - correct call, but Zuke didn´t know about the new rule. Team forgot to tell him about it, even though it´s Zuccarello responsibility to know the rule.

Ha, I dont know. Im of the thinking you need at least half a season of NHL games to make a legitimate judgment on a player.

I think the overwhelming tendency around here is to get in front of a blossoming prospect in order to be the first to say "I told you so!" about the guy. More often than not, without the proper scope of NHL time to make a judgment, it tends to expose those kinds of people. The Kreider stuff has made a lot of people look like idiots on this board, so they take it out on the coach.

I had loads of fun watching him be part of a shutout in his 1st game back, and then sit in the box for 6 minutes in his 2nd game.

I had lots of fun watching the team win last year playing the same "boring" hockey they're playing this year.

I did too. Then I realized I found myself more panicked during games last year than excited. We'd constantly be in 1 goal games, or tie games, and we'd never be able to put a team away. We'd play conservative and teams would just attack and hammer away, making every game a panic ridden event.

In addition, I realize, I found it so fun to watch their games because I connected with the team. They stood for something. They played for each other, they fought for each other. We got to know individual personalities through HBO and started rooting for individual players based on how well we connected to them. I could have cared less the system we played last year because I loved watching the guys just go out on the ice and have fun. The winning was definitely a part of that.

But that's not to say the system is not boring, or that it's just not a good hockey system in general. Too many players put at risk for serious injury blocking shots like that, too much talent goes goes to waste, too many players have their confidence killed, we don't use our personnel efficiently... the list goes on.

You have the best goaltender in the league, you have 5 very solid defensemen (with Staal back) on the ice and a 6th who's more than capable of playing 10 minutes a game. In addition, you have like 8 players who have natural offensive goal scoring abilities (Gaborik, Richards, Nash, Stepan, Kreider, Callahan, Hagelin, Zuccarello). The system should reflect their strengths, not force round pegs into square holes. Best goalie and solid defense? Allow them to play their game. Pure offensive talent? Open the ice up, have them play an offensive system. Not everything is about defense. Instead, I'm watching Gaborik and Richards get bullied on the boards when they should be working magic around the circles. Not a good system.

I've always loved MZA! Such an exciting player and we all know this team needs some excitement. I thought he looked good last night. I can forgive those penalties.

I have probably missed this, but why? From the Rangers Front Office point of view he was a no risk/high reward - project.

They had his rights to the cost of nothing and paying him "nothing" the reminder of the season. Why wouldnt they try a healthy guy in shape just finnished his season in the worlds second best league? If it doesnt work out, who cares? If it does --> yay

From The Rangers point of view, it was a no brainer the moment Mats' said yes.

The last 2 games zuke's been Our best enforcer...

Doens't back Down, throws his body around, among those With the most hits and ice time..

Only thing he needs right now is a goal or 2..

Don't know if I would have used the word enforces, hehe, but he has been physical
