That's absolutely a factor in why I left - I experienced that connectedness factor in other cities (NYC and DC) and how much I could do and see just on foot and via public transportation. I loved not having a car. But again, that's just my preference. Others might say something completely opposite like "Wow it's really nice to be able to hop in the car that's in my garage, drive to a grocery store and park in a parking lot and realistically purchase more than a few days groceries at a time!"

We talked about this before in another thread - but yes I also ended up selling my car. I was in a health crisis and knew I always felt better when I walked more, so that was probably the biggest factor. It worked.

Funny enough I still get a week's worth of groceries whether I drive or walk. I use my hiking backpack or I do the farmer's carry and get a free workout.

Squash's explanation why makes a ton of sense, hadn't considered that before.

The next step in understanding, and this is really radicalizing - is that even in later blooming cities like Columbus, they actually weren't first built for the car. There were streetcars and trolleybuses all over the place in Columbus, just like every other American city. "They weren't built for the car, they were demolished for the car."
