Huge fan of Olivier. If I were GM I'd offer him $2.75m/4 years today with most of it as a signing bonus to essentially make it fully guaranteed.

Worst case scenario-his offense dries up-the CBJ would have perhaps the league's best fighter which has marketing/other player "protection" value whether Gary Bettman and those who wish to turn the NHL into a glorified version of the Ice Capades think so or not.

His goal is to become a Tom Wilson-type of player which is a 5-6m AAV proposition. His agent will have that in mind, but I'd think that Olivier would be thrilled with a $3.25m AAV compromise (once again with a lot of signing bonus). Striking while the iron is hot is always a good negotiating tactic IMO and I think that Olivier can utilize that now.

3-4 million for him seems insane to me
This is the first year he’s (probably) going to score more than 15 points.

Why in the world would we pay him more than Jenner or Marchenko?
With the cap going up, $3-4M AAV would be appropriate.
This season’s Olivier is an absolute unicorn; somebody will pay him that on the presumption that this is the Olivier you get for the next 4-5 years. I hope that somebody is CBJ. Watching Fantilli flash “2-4” tells me all I need to know about what Olivier means to the room.

Marchenko will get paid significantly more than $4M on next contract, assuming goal scoring continues upward trend.

Boones contract has some hometown discount and some time built into it. Cap was lower when Boone’s current contract negotiated.

It feels like only a month ago I was saying we should forgot about signing him for under $2m, it will start with a 2. Now it's forgot about the contract being under $3m, it will likely start with a 3.

If he goes to UFA, with this many teams floating cap space, then I'm sure you'd agree he'll be getting several $3m offers, maybe some around $4m. I could see him going to Montreal.

The question is whether we are better off without him at that dollar figure. If it's $4m x 3 then I'd prefer to keep him, same if it is like $3m x 5. You can get a 40 pt scorer in UFA with that money but I don't think we'll find better value for what we need.

I think he will test free agency. These unheralded guys (Olivier, Gavrikov, Bobrovsky) haven’t had the opportunity to be wined and dined and told how awesome they are by the hockey community. He brings a game that is valuable to any team, but especially value to playoff teams.

Of course that is possible, but I don’t get that vibe from Olivier. I think if he got a fair offer on a 3-4 year contract he would extend. He seems to really enjoy the team and his role.

Because we can. Jenner signed at the wrong time.Cap was lower. Marchenko we signed on promise and it looks like he is living up to it.

Like Cyclone's approach of a big signing bonus. I'd try to go 3 or 4 years at a reasonable amount. Based on estimates of future cap increases I think a 3-4mm range would work. Might even get him for a bit less. I definitely think he should be extended and the sooner the better.

Exactly what was said about Gavrikov.
Difference is Gavrikov wasn’t as open as loving it here as the others were. The writing was on the wall with Gavrikov when he didn’t extend that summer, and if I recall right, there was some hurt feelings about that (and then later with the trade drama with Boston). Dont get that feeling with Olivier yet

Was there video footage of Gavrikov talking about how much he and his family love Columbus? Obviously each player is different, and my read on Olivier could be completely wrong. He just strikes me as someone who may value fit and feeling appreciated as much as getting maximum dollars. 3-4 years is a good amount of security for a bottom six winger, and he would be getting a nice raise. I hope he stays.

I guarantee you the argument has been made regarding a player saying he loves his current city and team and teammates and the message board response has been “what do you expect him to say?”

I understand that. I've also acknowledged that I could be wrong in reading the situation.

I work in an industry where people job hop frequently. Over the years I've become pretty good at gauging who is likely to jump for a bigger paycheck and who is more strongly motivated by other factors. That doesn't necessarily translate to this situation. But I also think the vibe I sense from Olivier is more than blindly following what most players say. We'll find out soon enough.

Anybody remember the Behind the Battle where they talked about Olivier and his son? They were part of building a sensory room or something at the arena. I dont remember which one it was, but Olivier also seemed to love it here then too. Granted, like others have said, he's not going to say anything openly bad.

I would give him a longer than you'd think contract. Dont know about AAV but I would offer 4ish. He obviously wont keep scoring like he is now, but he's always going to be a useful player in some role. Plus he's obviously a great leader. I dont think I've ever seen one Jacket fire up the team quite like he did against Calgary.
