New York Islanders: Mathieu Darche is named GM of the New York Islanders

I really hope that he’s allowed to be part of the draft this year. Lots of room for him to make deals and do what he has to do during that time and heading into the summer.

Also wouldn’t mind his buddy, throwing him a bone and giving him an opportunity to trade for Isaac Howard

I don't get why he wouldn't be running the show completely at the draft? Do we really think Lou will be running the show and he'll just be in the background?

Also that's a good point on Howard! That would be an opportunistic pickup.

Frankly just hiring a GM today and going with Collins as "interim president" suggests that the POHO for the Islanders will be one more focused on building a modern front office. If the Isles wanted a POHO with experience in player personnel and scouting, they would have hired Shanahan or Bergevin. Instead, the Isles seem content to keep searching.

My choice for President is now Kate Madigan.

If you looked at just her resume without knowing the person's identity you would have to think she is more than qualified for this job. Woman, man, squirrel. Hire this person.

Just curious, where did you see Collins as interim President?

They don't really need a President. Sounds like Darche has full autonomy and control, so that kinda throws continuing to search for a President out the window.

Just for kicks I checked the FLA, TBL and DAL team websites. Zito, Brisebois and Nill run the hockey operations for those teams. All 3 teams (really all teams) have separate front offices that run the business side of the team. All 3 of the GMs have additional titles beyond just GM. Zito is GM and President. Brisebois is GM and VP. Anyway, nothing unusual if Darche as GM/EVP runs the hockey operations alone and the business side is other people (like Collins).

The reason is the NHL has rules sometimes when a guy comes from an organization they’re not allowed to be a part of that team’s draft because they have all of the scouts information from their previous team

Has a first time GM ever walked into a job with the first overall pick before? Hell of a way to make your first stamp on a team.
And if he is truly looking 3 years ahead I’m gonna guess he’s picking Schaffer, not sure that’s the proper spelling

I think this is a solid move — I would like to see if he is name President and GM or just GM, and they either leave president open or as I suspect, Collins would function as president. Not sure Shanny would want to come in (or anyone else) who did not hire the GM himself.

Still — i like the move. i think Darche is more than ready, and will bring a modern and fresh approach. He comes from a great program that has drafted and developed players and run the cap well.
Yes from your lips to God’s ear.

I know nothing of Management types in the NHL , but having read all the comments from our more knowledgeable posters here that seem to be plugged in I like the move, a breath of fresh air certainly.

Do you have any links on that? I am not aware of any specific rules limiting Darche's ability to be involved in the draft with the Islanders. I'd be curious to learn more.

Exactly, this is becoming more common and not just in the NHL.

I don’t think it is a rule but rather a negotiation. Any new GM that is currently employed must be let out of a contract. The old organization does so under the condition the new GM can’t participate in the new teams draft.

I don’t know if Darche will be a good GM.

I do know that Isles fans should be elated that they dodged a bullet by not hiring Marc Bergevin.

Good luck. At minimum you avoided a terrible GM.

I was saying this since Bergevin's name was mentioned as a possible Lou replacement...

If we hired him Habs fans were going to come out of the woodwork to tell us what a mistake we made.

Instead we have Habs fans telling us what a bullet we just dodged.

I knew this was going to happen. Why you ask...? BECAUSE BERGEVIN IS A TERRIBLE CHOICE FOR GM. Habs fans experienced it, and yet some here were banking on Bergevin "learning from his mistakes."

I am beyond relieved we didn't make that horrible mistake.

Matty Darche!

Awesome call Seafoam. You'll get even more credit when Darche lifts the Cup over his head (again).

32 thoughts... actually 3:
- I love this hire. Darche is coming from a very good organization with a lot of smart people.
I can't wait to see what he has in store for the Isles.
- I would like to shed some light on John Collins. I honestly never heard of him until Lou was fired.
I was well aware of Ledecky and Malkin, but I didn't know any of the ownership group beyond them.
- The easy choice and safe choice for GM would have been Shanahan or Bergevin. Reaching out
to someone with no previous GM experience is always a bit of a gamble. I think we need to
give Collins some props for not doing the same old, same old. He also seemed to be the leading
voice in the push to remove Lou. It's still too early to see how much of a hand he'll have in shaping the organization but I like what Ive seen so far. He seems to be very proactive.

We need Lou outta the picture completely that said I do not know anything about Darche besides what I have read,,,,,,and just about everything I have been reading has been positive. PS I personally would not have taken the job as GM if the previous GM was still involved or has a say in the operations so IMO one way or another Lou needs to be totally gone

How can we find out for sure if Darche will be allowed at the draft? If it really is up to the Lightning it would be awefully petty of them to not allow him to fully run it for the Isles.

Why?

The lightning don't have a 1st or 3rd round pick, so only 1 (#56) iin the first 96 picks.

On top of that unless trades are made...The Isles don't have a pick within 14 spots of Tampa in the 1st 3 rounds, so that's a big gap where it would be surprising if the Isles would snipe the guy they wanted.

The Lou angle still needs to be addressed. I'm sure there's a press conference planned in the next little while as the Isles introduce Darche to their fans. If anyone on this board follows Staple or Botta or any of the journalists that cover the Islanders please press them on this matter. I would but I'm not on any social media sites.

We need to know what Lou's role will be, who's in charge of the draft (maybe someone in the scouting department?), and how much longer Lou will be with the organization.

Don’t think it matters. I’m trying to find clarification. There have definitely been times in the past where guys had to wait until after the draft to “join” their teams operation.
