New York Islanders: Mathieu Darche is named GM of the New York Islanders

Isles officially announced him as GM and executive vice president. Interesting so either Collins is gonna be president or they’re gonna find another president.

Or Malkin is the CEO and Darche operates as an Executive of the company reporting only to the CEO.

The wording in the article specifies that he will oversee all hockey operations. They don't necessarily need a President in name if he will effectively perform most of the job.

Yes. So he has the keys to the entire operation. I don’t mind it because he has experience in all areas. I wanted a collective of minds but this isn’t bad because of Darche and his ability.

Some key points from the article...

Islanders principal owner Scott Malkin, operating partner John Collins and co-owner Jon Ledecky undertook this search on April 22, when the team announced Lamoriello’s contract would not be renewed after seven seasons running the Isles. Ownership initially sought a quick outcome, interviewing and offering the dual president/GM role to Ken Holland. The Isles were turned down by Holland, who took the Kings’ GM job, and were turned away by the Canadiens when they sought permission to speak with executive vice president of hockey operations Jeff Gorton.

After that, the Islanders pivoted to three other candidates: former Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin, former Columbus Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekäläinen and Darche. Earlier this week, team sources said the Islanders were exploring a power-sharing arrangement with Bergevin and Darche, but a final situation could not be reached. Then Shanahan’s name emerged, with the Islanders having asked permission to speak with the Leafs president earlier in the search, and that permission was granted Wednesday.

But Malkin, Collins and Ledecky found what they wanted in Darche and went ahead with the hire. There will surely be additional moves coming as Darche evaluates a front office that hasn’t changed in years, with Lamoriello having retained the bulk of Garth Snow’s scouting and development staffs. Darche will also evaluate coach Patrick Roy, who has three years remaining on his contract.

Lamoriello may stay in some capacity beyond the end of his contract on June 30, but team sources have said Lamoriello has no planned role in hockey operations. As a first-time GM, Darche may seek out an experienced executive to advise him or come on board in some capacity.

I think it's pretty telling that they had that much trust in him right off the bat. It speaks a lot to Darche's reputation and his ability to convey his competence in his interviews.

I think I prefer this to the alternative of Shanahan + Darche.

From his interviews, I’m not surprised he’s extremely detailed and really laid out his process and philosophies on how to build a hockey team when he’s been on podcast and stuff. He definitely came across in his interviews the same way I’m sure of it.

This all happened too quickly. No one even made a “shovels in the ground” joke!

Too quickly? It was just a day or so ago that posters were bitching about how long the process was taking it, calling it "an embarrassment" and a "shitshow".

I think it took just the right amount of time to get this highly thought of candidate. We had a little luck as well with Holland taking the Kings job.

Totally agree and that is what sold me on him as well.

I feel confident the franchise is heading in the right direction after the events in of the past month+.

I really hope that he’s allowed to be part of the draft this year. Lots of room for him to make deals and do what he has to do during that time and heading into the summer.

Also wouldn’t mind his buddy, throwing him a bone and giving him an opportunity to trade for Isaac Howard

The POHO + GM arrangement generally strikes me as ‘too many cooks in the kitchen’. I’m sure it works well somewhere, but I would rather have one person who is the definitive authority on personnel.

Well we just left a tyrannical reign of one chef insisting he be the only employee in the entire restaurant. Most all these Cup winners have bigger staffs and a lot more discussions/cooperating, so there's plenty of room for the Isles/Darche to hire other front office execs before it turns into a Charles WAng utpoia where there are 5 GMs and ownership in on every decision.

Does ownership not want a PoHO because
1-they want Darche to have autonomy?
2-they don’t see a candidate they like for that spot?
3-don’t want to pay another salary?
4-Collins will pseudo serve that role?
