Some key points from the article...
Islanders principal owner Scott Malkin, operating partner John Collins and co-owner Jon Ledecky undertook this search on April 22, when the team announced Lamoriello’s contract would not be renewed after seven seasons running the Isles. Ownership initially sought a quick outcome, interviewing and offering the dual president/GM role to Ken Holland. The Isles were turned down by Holland, who took the Kings’ GM job, and were turned away by the Canadiens when they sought permission to speak with executive vice president of hockey operations Jeff Gorton.
After that, the Islanders pivoted to three other candidates: former Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin, former Columbus Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekäläinen and Darche. Earlier this week, team sources said the Islanders were exploring a power-sharing arrangement with Bergevin and Darche, but a final situation could not be reached. Then Shanahan’s name emerged, with the Islanders having asked permission to speak with the Leafs president earlier in the search, and that permission was granted Wednesday.
But Malkin, Collins and Ledecky found what they wanted in Darche and went ahead with the hire. There will surely be additional moves coming as Darche evaluates a front office that hasn’t changed in years, with Lamoriello having retained the bulk of Garth Snow’s scouting and development staffs. Darche will also evaluate coach Patrick Roy, who has three years remaining on his contract.
Lamoriello may stay in some capacity beyond the end of his contract on June 30, but team sources have said Lamoriello has no planned role in hockey operations. As a first-time GM, Darche may seek out an experienced executive to advise him or come on board in some capacity.
