Player Discussion Mason McTavish

William Eklund is having a much better season than McTavish. 24 points in 30 games.
Dylan Guenther has 25 points in 28 games. Wyatt Johnston has 17 in 27.

At the draft it was seen that McTavish was the most likely to play Center at the NHL level than Eklund which may have influenced Murray's decision ?

Put Johnston, Eklund, and Guenter on the team, then their offense will be deprived out of them. Zegras went from 60+ point production for two seasons and then a void since Cronin entered the picture. All of our guys' offense have taken great steps backwards save Terry. Though, Terry's offense did take a hit last season under Cronin.

Recent callup Colangelo was a scoring machine in San Diego this season with 9g + 6a = 15 pts in 14 games. Since his call up, Colangelo has been put in a 4th line role and has 0 pts in 8 games. Colangelo's goal scoring in the AHL is "symbolic", according to Cronin.

I liked him, Fabbri and cutter today.

Had a few chances but just couldn’t put them away. As long as he’s getting the chances the goals will eventually come.

He took a lot of d zone draws which is a pretty big ask when facing a guy like Tavares who’s one of the best in the league.

I feel like it’s a confidence thing with him and many others right now.

I read on X Cronin is saying that he was misquoted on the Third Liner quote but I cant seem to find it now. Anyone else see that?
Hadn't seen it before, good catch. Found it now:

“I didn’t see it,” said McTavish, who turns 22 on Thursday. “I’m kind of off (social media) during the season, Instagram and all that stuff. I don’t really track that stuff. At the end of the day, he’s your coach and he’s going to play you how he wants to play you. Just do what you’re told. It’s the NHL. You listen to your coach and (the) staff.

“I think he kind of told me that he didn’t mean to try to say it. It kind of got misquoted a bit. I don’t even know what he said. I just go play.”

Interesting that this is the second time this week that Cronin has indicated a dust-up has been due to a "misquote" (he addressed the Lyubushkin comments and said Lyubushkin called him to tell him he was misquoted, though which part was allegedly the misquote isn't clear). Though this one's also being relayed via McTavish so maybe word choice changed there.

I mean I know it’s kinda crazy that came out of Cro’s mouth but I don’t think he really meant that. In the context of the Ducks he’s on the “3rd line” and he kind of plays more of a lunch pail style - although i don’t think he does as much as I think Cro thinks he does.

Obviously Mason isn’t a 3rd liner and I don’t think Cronin really thinks that’s his upside. He’s the best centre on the team right now by a fair bit.

Cronin has to know he's not a popular guy based on lack of results. If he isn't smart enough to watch what he says publicly what kind of "unintentional" garbage is he spewing to the players that isn't helpful?

As a new GM Verbeek has a lot to learn. I sure hope he's learning fast.

This was my take. Literally right before he said something like he played great with Leo and Killorn. Then the he’s the third line guy. Which considering he was just talking about how well he played on the second line. Then he said the offensive upside and needs players to help him score and defensively responsible or some shit like that.

Plenty to complain about Cro on and off ice. But this seemed a little blown out of proportion.

Either way glad he’s playing well, getting an upgrade instead of Fabbri would be real nice.

I do think he needs to be more accurate in his descriptions of his players tho. So while I think this was fairly benign it was sloppy because we’re left to interpret it as fans. And with the media, agents and everything, it could potentially cause a stir up with a player. Luckily Mctavish didn’t seem too bothered by it.

Because Cronin has compared him to Tkachuk and now this it’s tough to tell if he really understands McT and I’ve wondered if that’s the case with other players too. Hope not but it’s just kind of sloppy like I said.

Definitely sloppy and with fan already wanted him gone, totally understand the in my opinion overreaction.

Honestly the last 2 seasons sucked for me and not because of Cronin, but because I forgot how fun it is to watch Zegras play hockey.

I read the tweet again. Z being inserted in the quote does add a lot of context as Z takes the wing with Carlsson. Then Cronin says that, "Mac is a third line guy that has offensive ability."

Now that we're winning and Mac is scoring, Cavanagh is backtracking. Good thing the internet still has the tweet up.
