As well as setting pretty high expectations.

Mac's PIM
2022-23 (Eakins): 80 games, 44 PIMs
2023-24 (Cronin): 64 games, 86 PIMs
2024-25 (Cronin): 7 games, 10 PIMs

Maybe the PIMs could be attributed to coaching.

You might be right. Ritchie had his worst PIM per game under Eakins and after he went to Boston, the next year it went down. And it stayed less than the Eakins year.

And all along we thought Ritchie was just one one of the dumbest players. It was the coach.

Before the season I said McTavish would need to take a step for the ducks to competitive. Ha hasn't.. Zegras and Mac t have regressed.. Although still young.. they have been in the league 3 years now.. Its not an excuse anymore.. Terry is the only one playing hard.. Its not about even playing hard... Its about how stupid Mac T is playing.. Dumb penalties.. Most in the offensive zone.. I gotta feeling Verbeek might trade one of the young guys for a shake up.. The truth is.. That wont work.. The coach is just way out of his league. We need a proven NHL ready coach.

It's too early in the season to make trades based on a few weeks of games.

Last year at this time Mac T looked like he was by far the best player on the team and people were wondering if Terry's contract would be an anchor to the teams salary cap in future years.

I feel like the team is too incomplete to really get a good read on what we have. You got green players who would probably be better served with some AHL experience (either this year or last) playing with overwhelmed vets that probably would be better served playing on a lower pairing / line. You have "older" youths like McTavish and Zegras who have been surrounded by some of the worst teams the league has ever seen, coached by one of the leagues worst coaches and possibly a second all time bad coach in Cronin.

I guess they could trade Zegras and or McTavish but I don't see the point in it. The names out there have been incredibly underwhelming.

Blaming the coach for McTavish taking dumb offensive zone penalties every game is certainly a vibe.
I don’t blame Cronin for the penalties but I do blame him for the lack of progression offensively.

Honestly, the penalty thing isn’t that big of a deal in and of itself IMO. He’s a young player who’s immature. The ducks had a guy named Corey Perry who took a bunch of penalties (more than McTavish). The difference is in the production and progression offensively

He looks so awkward with the way he skates so upright. No speed, no tenacity, really just awkwardly strides to the puck in a lot of situations. He is very good when he's open and has time but has seemed to fumble a lot of possessions this year when he's had time to make a move but under a small amount of pressure. Really think he's gotta dig and get lower to use his body a lot more.

Terry didn't break out until his D+7 season. His offense took a dip last year, his D+9 season. This year will be Z's D+6 season (age 23) and Mac's D+4 season (age 22). Maybe we need to figure out patience and see if the offensive scheme truly is abysmal in year 2 before shipping out a couple of young, offensive forwards who are still developing.

He had 2 points last night and Zegras had zero but McTavish is the new whipping boy and Zegras is the golden boy. Neither of them will be as good as Carlsson will be.
Imagine if the Ducks had Boldy and Wyatt Earp Johnston instead of Zegras and McTavish.
I guess then you put Gauthier at Center behind Carlsson if you have Boldy and Wyatt.
Ducks were looking for Centers in both drafts.

Terry was a 5th round pick. It’s not the same.

If we drafted Boldy (less of an issue) or Wyatt Johnston, there would be riots at the time. And people would be fine now obv.

Terry was a 5th round pick. It’s not the same.

There are first round talents drafted beyond the top-10. Even then, the draft is a gamble from pick 1 to the end of round 7. Anaheim always finds first round talent in goalies despite never drafting a goalie in the first round. That NHL jump is still a huge, steep jump.

Terry was a known quantity in his D+2 season, both at the NCAA level and at the WJC-20 as Mr. 5-hole. That same 2016-17 season, Steel had 131 points in 66 regular season WHL games. We thought we hit jackpot on both players.

Terry stayed another year in college, his third, and then made his pro debut with the AHL club in his D+4 season. In the AHL as a rookie, he was a ppg player in 41 games with 16g + 25a. Young Terry was too good for the AHL, but couldn't figure out how to make the NHL jump. It took a while, but that talent was always there for Terry. For some players, the NHL ate them up and spit them out like a Steel, a Comtois, or a Nick Ritchie. For others, it takes moving onto an organization or two for things to click like William "Wild Bill" Karlsson. That NHL jump is steep and real. It may take a while for some to develop.

Here's a great, long form article on Terry rise from 5th round pick to the Feb 2023 by Stephens:

Before DET took Seider, I was convinced Boldy would be the best available to us. Zegras just felt like he dropped to us. We weren't that far off from getting Boldy at all. We also just needed a center that year.

If I remember correctly, in his draft year Z was seen as a center. He just played wing in the WJCs. It was believed we were looking for centers that year. For the record, I don't regret taking Z either.
I still really like the Z pick even with him still trying to find his game so far this year. Getz was old, Kesler was done. Steel was far from a sure thing at that time and even if he worked out, probably still more of a 2nd liner. Zegs had 1st line upside and still does IMO.
