Yes I think that's fair. We've had some bad luck for sure, there are a few things not on your list that were also bad luck. I won't add to your list because I'm loath to make excuses for these guys, but I do think it's fair to say that our playoff performance has been better than our 1-8 series record would indicate. On the other hand, 1-8 is still really bad. We should still have done better than that, even with the bad luck we've had so I think it's understandable that many people are disappointed.

Bad luck after 8 terrible attempts at winning is not bad luck. We crossed over to bad core and coaching long ago.

Mitch Marner after 10 games 1/8th of a season is on pace for a measly 8 goals.

1730296353340.png

Some fans believe Marner's goals scored don't matter much as Leafs losses mount, but he is producing at a 4th line checker level like a David Kampf at present.

Perhaps Treliving can use this disappointing regular season goal production to his leverage advantage in contract talks to get a sharp discount on his next deal, because we all know Marner struggles to score goals in the playoffs with only 11 goals after 8 seasons and 9 playoff series as well.

Willy in his contract year last season stormed out of the gates with 6 goals 8 assists 14 points in his first 10 on the way to a season where he finished with 40 goals and 98 points.

That he's producing like Kampf is an interesting spin

Yes, Nylander had a great start with his 6 goals and 14 points. Did that projection after 10 games match his end of season totals?

When watching the games you arrive at the conclusion that he spends 'most of their time at the blueline'?

He spends more time close to the blueline than he does the blue paint. Is the narrative now that Marner is actually a crease crashing netfront guy or something? He’s the definition of a perimeter player, this is not even remotely arguable.

This is a case where the eye test doesn’t match the stat sheet. When Matthews’ slappers from the slot find the back of the net more often he could be on pace for 150 in any particular 10 game stretch.

If they win enough to make the playoffs the regular season points don’t matter. The hope is they learn throughout the season what it takes to win in April and May. Let’s see if they build on the last game.

 Just saying he doesn't spend the majority of his time at the blueline as you believe.

There is no love hate. A few posters say that but it's not true at all.

This is a referendum on team success and probability of winning a cup with a 12-13m Mitch.

Stolarz is going to want 7m if legit. Knies 7m. What about other prospects, are they to just look at the cap and do a Robertson? F THIS PLACE pretty much, rather go somewhere to get paid.
If players want to leave so be it. I wouldn’t anoint Stolarz just yet. He’s never been a starter or played more than 28 games. Goalie’s like that aren’t paid $7M. Robertson is a tweener so who cares if he wants out. Knies looks like the real deal but he’s an RFA so no need to panic. Balancing and deepening the roster is key. Their top four dman are set for the next four years and their forward group should be their next priority. If they pay Marner $12-13M they’re not going to be able to do what they need elsewhere but I wouldn’t put it past them.

It's all about getting ready for the playoffs for sure. As far as building on the last game, I'm so used to the team going up and down like a bunch of yoyo's all season long (and that carries over to the playoffs), that it's hard to even imagine it going any other way.

Fun chat with MacKinnon on spittin chicklets from earlier in the year:

He talks about Marner at around 2:00:55

Wonder if its a hint to Marner being on McDavids line at the 4 nations.

MacKinnon also seems to love Marners game and be a little taken aback to how much negative press Marner gets lol. Doesnt know this city. Would have cooked him alive earlier in his career when he had a slow start and would probably be going after him for his "minus 5 on the season" today lol.

I think some watch games with a hypercritical eye looking to pounce on any misplay.
My eye says the top line has been consistently the best line all year, I'd be surprised if the stats don't show that.
They’ve been decent but there’s no way you can honestly say that with a straight face

Mack wasn't asked about playoff Marner though now was he? But even if he was, of course he'd say nice things about him, that's what NHL players almost always do.

As far as going after him because of minus 5 on the season today, you're insane. You play for us in the playoffs the way Mack has played and you get a free pass for a very long time. Lead us to a cup win and that free pass is good for life.

Yes, because he’s the best. I’ll be cheering for the team. “Gimmicky” is a lame way to undercut a simple fact of who are the best Canadians. Just like yesterday when the Selke is somehow meaningless because people can’t go beyond black and white here. Kind of boring, all I do is counter the excessive garbage, I’ve already stated a billion times he failed us in the playoffs. Try it sometime.

Obtuse.
Obtuse huh lol says the guy who claims marners made the team and the he wasn’t named in the small group that made the team …… loool your awesome

Mackinnon wouldn't get cooked here for -5 start as any body who watches hockey can see that is due to Goergiev struggling to give .800 goaltending to the Avs.

If he was here he would be getting the same praise today as he does on the Avs. He is the 2nd or 3rd best player in the league after Mcdavid (hik and Kucherov top 2 after 97)

His production with drouin, lehkenon & nichkuskin missing the season so far would have him being praised as would the Avs being 5-5 (1 pt worse than us) despite the horrific goaltending and injuries to their team so far.

Marner is getting faulted as he has produced so far below expectations and has a poor +/- in a small sample size where Stolarz has beej mostly elite for us.

Marner needs to be better at offense and defense for the team. 11 pts in 10 games is not enough.

And all that fails to mention how consistent Mackinnon is for best players in the world (at the very top of scoring races yearly) while being one of the best playoff players league wide with a cup vs marner who sees his production falter heavily in the playoffs

Do any other star forwards spend most of their time at the blueline?

I never said anything about spending most of his time there.

All I did was answer your question why he is at the blueline so often. Whether he actually spends most of his time there is debateable. But to be honest I don't really care.

The fact remains that he is usually the high forward for his line and that's why he is closer to the blueline on average than his two linemates.

No, and neither did Matty's or Mitch's or JT's or Mo's, or....

A hockey game is somewhat random, it's not chemistry where you get exactly the same results every time.

Let's not be excessively silly.

Think you meant to quote @Mess it was his projection.
Careful, you may have to defend Marner while doing so.

One game ago Tavares was on pace for about 20 goals. Now he's on pace for 45. Do you see how a small sample is bad for this kind of thing? After only 10 games the numbers will swing wildly.

Yes, Marner hasn't scored much so far, and it's not good news. But this is an obviously bogus way to present it. You have to know that.

Why is he at the blueline so often? Call me crazy but I like my wingers taking the puck to the general vicinity of the net.
I was replying to waver saying that MM quickly gets rid of the puck whenever he gets it, which I don't think is accurate. imo much of his play around the blueline results from him gaining the zone with control of the puck to look for a play.
