They have Matthews and Nylander signed for 3 more yrs so the likelihood of them winning soon is very low so if the wheels fall completely off this year I would be looking for good young talent (especially D) and draft picks to play with Knies, Minton , Cowan and hopefully Woll.

One isn't available. So losing Marner doesn't get you that. It gets you things that make you wish you had Marner again.

Marner isn't even remotely close to a 12 million dollar player. His p/60 goes from 12th in the season to 42nd in the playoffs. His g/60 goes from 104th in the season to 205th in the playoffs.

Paying him 12 million would make him a top 5 player in the league, come playoff time he's not even top 50, especially when you factor in he doesn't hit, he doesn't fight and just in general he is a cowardly overpaid spoiled little brat.

That 4vs4 assist to Reilly - This is Marners new go to move, attack and then quickly reverse back, almost like a bball players drop shot. It worked here, however, Marner tried this move often vs Boston in the playoffs and more often than not they stole the puck because playoffs defense is tighter and faster. Its a "cute" play and im not a fan. Marner just looks like he only knows how to play globetrotter hockey. Its pretty obvious why he struggles in playoff hockey.

Regarding the Marner being overused on PK comment by Berube.. yea, you have to work with what you are given. This is what hes given:

Berube is playing Marner with Matthews because it’s the best fit for the roster - shooter with passer, and who can play center (Nylander with Domi, Tavares centering the third line, Matthews with Marner). Also, to make this roster successful, Berube absolutely needs Marner to produce, and Marner's mental struggles are well-documented. last thing Berube needs is for one of his 11+ million players to have a bad year. So it makes sense that he is gonna do whatever he can do get Marner producing and rolling. Even Keefe last year pointed out how Marner has lows every season where he struggles and they need to get him out of the funks. Which meant always putting him back wuth Matthews, even when Matthews was rolling with other lines.

Recall, however, that by the end of Keefe’s tenure, when playoff success became the measuring stick, his preference was to separate Matthews and Marner. And similarly towards the end of Dubas’ time, there were reports that he wanted to move Marner.

Berube’s short-term focus makes sense for this teams short term success, but it probably means the same postseason results. Additionally, having Marner propped up by Matthews in a contract year is not good for the team long term.

Maybe playing Marner without Matthews for a whole year would give a better understanding to what his real value is on the market.

Coaches are always going to give their best players the most minutes.
This is a bit of a disconnect for some since they struggle in identifying the best players.

Berube likes Marners penalty killing...but no way a coach who wants his players to play N-S, not be cute and play physical "loves" Mitch Marner. in fact Berube continues to talk about certain players being too cute and playing east west.

Shocker...is it possible that Berube likes facets of Marners game?
