What is the value of Marner? What would people pay for just 1 year or an extended Marner?
What’s your definition of “not much”? Obviously with an extension it would get more of a return but for one full season you could get a a nice haul for Marner. Teams give up 1sts + good prospects for deadline rentals. An extended Marner would carry very high value but a 1 year rental at 11M is not getting much of a return.
Agreed. There is a lot of baggage there as well. Bad attitude, coward, wilts under pressure.A lot less than you and leafs fans think.
If he went at the deadline with full retention then yes, a pretty good return. This summer without a new contract and no retention the return would likely include a pending UFA and one really good piece. What’s your definition of “not much”? Giroux was easier to swallow and it came with retention and you had a desperate gmClaude Giroux returned a first, a third and Owen Tippet. So start there if it’s a rental. Marner has a NMC but Leafs aren’t desperate to trade him for a lowball offer like the Hawks were with Kane. We can use him as an own rental.
For an extended Marner, I’d look at the Eichel deal as a comparison.
A worse player in a 1 for 1. Dubas gave him that contract to carry him to UFA AND put a NMC clause the last year to boot. Totally absurd he’d do that to a RFA but here we are and the only hope we have it a good return is Marner showing mercy to the team he fleeced before.
Either way though, trading for a lesser player and the cap space that will come with not resigning Marner to an even bigger contract is a win. Maybe he’ll show some mercy and allow for a sign and trade so the leafs get a better return.
No way I’m getting invested in this team again if they make the exact same mistake and resign Marner to another huge contract. They need change and cannot get away with running it back again. They’d be better off without a 13m forward and picking up someone like Pesce and having money on the table to extend Knies.
Not really. Then you just swap out Tavares’ 11m for Nylander’s 11.5. You still have the exact same problem and then Marner and Matthews Will be 13.5 instead of 11. Same problem all over again and it would be insanity to do it. Marner has to go and that decision should have been made when they gave Nylander his contract. But they will have change when Tavares leaves.
He’s gotta go. We know we lose trade. I’d do it for a young NHL player and a first. You acquire the Dman through Marner’s cap savings.Leafs are much better off keeping him.
The return will be underwhelming

As an example:
Wright
Sea 1rst
Sign Montour for 7.5-8
That is a solid return and reallocated our cap dollars where they need to go.
Haha if that's the return Leafs fans should be doing cartwheels in the street. He’s gotta go. We know we lose trade. I’d do it for a young NHL player and a first. You acquire the Dman through Marner’s cap savings.

How so? They kept him for 8 years and achieved nothing with him.Leafs are much better off keeping him.
