An extended Marner would carry very high value but a 1 year rental at 11M is not getting much of a return.

What’s your definition of “not much”? Obviously with an extension it would get more of a return but for one full season you could get a a nice haul for Marner. Teams give up 1sts + good prospects for deadline rentals.

Could LA be a trading partner? PLD and an RD type of basis?

PLD converted to winger/C in a pinch and can be Tavares replacement long term. PLD also there to try and get salaries to match as close as possible. Toronto also secures a better RD option on a better contract than what might be available on the market to them? Or acquires an RD from LA while still chasing a premiere top 4 UFA option?

LA upgrades their RW, has excess RW they could consider flipping to contribute towards a goalie? Opens space for Byfield to play C?

Maybe this trade doesn't work, but I can't imagine a Marner trade without a huge 8AAV + contract going the other way.

If he went at the deadline with full retention then yes, a pretty good return. This summer without a new contract and no retention the return would likely include a pending UFA and one really good piece.

There won’t be that many suitors who could absorb his cap hit now, who could extend him and who he’d accept a trade to. A tough spot for the Leafs.

I’d say the recipe would be at least a 1st + young-ish roster player and more, but that’s a tough deal to make. If didn’t already make $11M and wouldn’t demand that or more on his next deal, I could see CAR being very interested and they have Necas to peddle. But, I just don’t see the fit with what Marner will want long term.

A worse player in a 1 for 1. Dubas gave him that contract to carry him to UFA AND put a NMC clause the last year to boot. Totally absurd he’d do that to a RFA but here we are and the only hope we have it a good return is Marner showing mercy to the team he fleeced before.

Either way though, trading for a lesser player and the cap space that will come with not resigning Marner to an even bigger contract is a win. Maybe he’ll show some mercy and allow for a sign and trade so the leafs get a better return.

No way I’m getting invested in this team again if they make the exact same mistake and resign Marner to another huge contract. They need change and cannot get away with running it back again. They’d be better off without a 13m forward and picking up someone like Pesce and having money on the table to extend Knies.

Claude Giroux returned a first, a third and Owen Tippet. So start there if it’s a rental. Marner has a NMC but Leafs aren’t desperate to trade him for a lowball offer like the Hawks were with Kane. We can use him as an own rental.

For an extended Marner, I’d look at the Eichel deal as a comparison.
Giroux was easier to swallow and it came with retention and you had a desperate gm

Because of Marners cap hit it more likely involves players on a roster like Marner for 2 players who combine at 8M or so , a secondary prospect and a 2nd

Problem is no contender team will be after him and he has a NMC.

Plus his 11 mil contract.

So suitors won't be plenty.

It will affect the return.

Expect NHL veteran with $$ + middle/late first + prospects/additional picks/young NHLer

It also depends on of Rantanen is on the market. Two elite wingers, big contracts. One has won the cup.

But they will have change when Tavares leaves.

Not really. Then you just swap out Tavares’ 11m for Nylander’s 11.5. You still have the exact same problem and then Marner and Matthews Will be 13.5 instead of 11. Same problem all over again and it would be insanity to do it. Marner has to go and that decision should have been made when they gave Nylander his contract.

Leafs are much better off keeping him.

The return will be underwhelming
He’s gotta go. We know we lose trade. I’d do it for a young NHL player and a first. You acquire the Dman through Marner’s cap savings.

As an example:
Wright
Sea 1rst

Sign Montour for 7.5-8

That is a solid return and reallocated our cap dollars where they need to go.

Zero chance they get that type of return.

Seattle has to pay him, give up a top 10 pick and a prospect? Not a chance.

Haha if that's the return Leafs fans should be doing cartwheels in the street.

Talk about delusional about the situation you guys are in.

Marner's value is such a weird one. Because he's a superstar scorer in the regular season. Potentially a game changer for a franchise. But he's also a pretty proven playoff no show at this point, which hurts his value to teams looking for a Cup.

The other thing is obviously that contract. Anyone who trades for Marner is basically doing so, under the premise that they're going to lock him up to a long-term deal at somewhere north of his current $11M deal. Which is just...how do you fit that in for a winger who disappears in the playoffs?

Combined...It really narrows the market.
