I guess it’s 50/50.
Either he kills us in game 7 or fans of his new team say where was he? Did he even win a puck battle?
This sounds like fun either way.

If I were a team going up against Marner in an important game, the first thing on the menu would be to have one of the knuckle draggers put a wallop on him and see if he has the guts to do anything the rest of the game. Even that isn't necessary, footsteps are enough.

He plays scared in the face of aggressive men. He is butter soft and nothing will change that.

All Marner had to do was tell Tre he wanted to stay last year and I’m 100% sure it would have been done.
Blaming the fans is foolish, Marner could have had a deal long before the playoffs and any booing started. But no, he rejected the Leafs offer and for a guy who wants to stay so badly will test free agency. Most likely to greed the price of his services.
He did us a favour. So long. Good luck in your next team and if they boo you in future playoffs don’t blame us.
If 14x8 is plenty good enough for a German kid Draistaitl to make a new home in wonderful Edmonton Alberta, and if 13.5x8 isn't even considered or even acknowledged for all we know , and this is supposed to be the hometown kid who grew up here and idolized all of the Leafs legends, then you tell the kid he's f***ing dumb and go kick rocks. Something clearly does not add up.

Don't think the door will be closed on Toronto for Marner. I think family life aspect is going to play a big part in whether he stays or goes.

Comfy life with your family around you to support your new family, or move your wife & new born across the country where your parents aren't as close.

I can't vote because the poll needs a 3rd option: keep at the right price. If he's willing to sign for something between Nylander and Matthews money, keep. Anything more and no thanks. Of course he probably won't do that but it needs to be said.

I understand your point but done even want him at all. If they are trying to change the culture in the room I doubt that will ever happen. After all these years I doubt he will ever become a clutch player in the hard games.
Running it back yet again 4-8 more years is a depressing thought from a fan standpoint

His attitude speaks volumes. Probably just best to walk on at all costs unless you have some sign and trade thing worked out. I think he is so full of himself he actually thinks he is a McDavid level player, what else could drive this sort of thing? Turning down 13.5m plus all the endorsements he gets here. Insane.

Can you imagine? Tre look we were really close, all we need is to give me more money, 15.5m and we will get it done I swear. I need it to feel appreciated lol

Yea but they said the same thing in the early Yzerman era and the early Ovechkin era until those teams won. There's always hope and he really is a damn good player.

Rumour was Tre offered him to Vegas this summer for Theo and Vegas said thanks but no thanks.
Tre was an idiot to ask for there best in prime D man. He should have asked for multiple smaller pieces like Hague, a 1st etc, might be getting 75 cents on the dollar, but it’s better then getting 0 cents on the dollar

I had a verbal agreement to buy a nice Gil Kane Superman for $800 USD.

That was the seller's asking price and I couldn't get him to come down even after negotiating extensively with him. So I sent the offer and expected it to be accepted and I would have to pay up and away we would go. Imagine my surprise when he sent back a counter-offer of $900 USD.

That piece will sell eventually but he probably won't get the $800 I offered him for it any time soon.

13.5x8=108... 108÷7=15.4

As of July 1st Marner can only sign a seven year contract regardless of which team gives it to him. That includes the Toronto Maple Leafs. I have to assume there is no way they give him 15.4x7.

There is ZERO chance anyone coughs up that much dough for a soft perimeter winger.

So Marner is costing himself some money. I'm not too sure how he benefits by going through with all this. If he really hated playing here so much he should have accepted a trade.

Rather than torturing himself for a year.

And if he did enjoy it here he would have signed that lucrative contract the Leafs offered him. Holding out for more money in free agency reeks of Klingbergism. In the end their greed was their undoing and they had to settle for less than the generous offer they were already provided.

Just like that moron who tried to squeeze an extra $100 on a piece of comic art he's been trying to sell for months at a price I was willing to give him.

Marner is 28 years old. I fully expect him to sign a 4-5 year contract so that he can sign another one at 33 years old. I don't think the 8th year is really an issue for him.

I dont think contending teams like Vegas/Florida can mess with their cap and sign Marner to a stupid contract. They are better going after somerone like Bennett/Ehlers depending on what they need who will be in the $7-9 million range. Marner at $13.5 is nuts, Marner at $15 million is going to cripple an organization.

Anaheim is not a Marner away from contending, he will sign for $15 million, they may squeek into the playoffs and then get bounced in the first round for his entire time there. Same with San Jose, Chicago, Columbus, Carolina, etc.

He needs to choose if he wants to be king or be rich. Everything I have seen from him is money. For him to chase cups he would need to take a contract that fits into a team structure. If he didnt do it for his boyhood dream team, why would he do it for some random team. I think he is too arrogant to learn.

He's already packed and at the border.

He is going to be over the cliff at 32 trust me. He is going to be slower without foot speed, the same shot, same body that can't deal with contact. He will be getting the 5m or less deals at 33.

Bank this statement. In 5 years I am going to look like the Oracle of Leaflandia.

100% money back guaranteed and certified.

I agree with you completely but don't you think if money is the motivator, he will be looking for setting up one final payday rather than the security? Even if you removed all of the money he has already made from playing and endorsements, the $13.5 x 8 year $108 million should be enough for him to live out his days post hockey. He would rather gamble and take $75 million now for the chance at making more next time. To me thats wild. I cannot imagine not taking $108 million + endorsements + staying in my hometown where my family is.

Most NHLers take generational money. Not enough for our playoff dubs 16 and 34. At least Willie gave them 8 years even though he'll probably take 100+ games off over the 8 years.

I know, he seems to be that kind of person and to me that means bat shit crazy or delusional or something. It's unfortunate that we didn't trade him after Montreal.

I'll be very surprised if Marner clears $108 gross over the next eight years.

Which means he would have to make up the difference in his later years when teams are loathe to give lucrative long term contracts to aging players.

Unless you're Brad Treliving signing Chris Tanev that is.

If he signs a 7 year deal, he will be 35 by the time that deal runs out.

He's a smooth skater who avoids contact, and doesn't really play a "heavy" game - the hockey IQ, and his ability to read the game away from the puck, will still be there at 35. Good chance that his skating will too, especially if he continues to be shifty and avoid getting hit.

Wouldn't rule out him making good money at 35+, to be honest. Especially if he goes somewhere where the core he's joining enables him to have more success than the anchors that all weighed each other down here.

Good Luck. I can't see the Canes paying him that much when Slavin is giving them a huge discount.

They offered Rantanen that contract, so the contract size is absolutely not a barrier for the Canes... I suspect they'll offer Marner the same one. Marner will get paid well, and for seven years by someone.
