Once Marner is signed Leafs not only will have the highest combined Cap hit for their 2 centres, but Marner + Nylander a pair of wingers will be top 5 as well highest AAV as well.

1) Matthews/Tavares
2) McDavid/Draisatil
3) Crosby/Malkin
------------------------------
4) Marner/Nylander
5) Kopitar/Carter

This continuously will change every season: the cap is fluid as are contract comparables/trends

For example, Perry and Getzlaf were two of the most expensive pairings the summer they signed contract extensions.

This is because the Leafs are currently in the position to be signing all of their big guns.

The next team in this position will likely be high on those lists as well.

This is basically the same as what many posters are saying about Leafs having players in double digits.

Going to be hard to win the cup with all these high salaries. Not much left for depth players.

I hope we get to have 39 of these, like we did with Willy.

Remember when we were going to sign all three at the same time for about $21 m? Those were the good old days when we'd buck the odds and never have any cap problems, and an our abundant pool of super ELCs would fill in holes (if there were any). Piece of cake.

Pittsburg in 2015-2016 for an example:

Top 4 paid players:

Pittsburg 2015-2016 - 32.25 mil (45% of cap)
  • Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, Letang
Leafs 2019-2020 - 39.5 mil (47% of cap)
  • Matthews, Tavares, Marner (@10), Nylander
Its not the greatest cap situation but with proper moves it's completely possible.

True. But, on the other side of the coin, that's why even 3 Cups (or two) in a 10-year window is a pretty rare and tremendous achievement - something to remember when talking about potential dynasties.

They should at least inquire if its true he is on Panarin's list of destinations. Certainly Marner and co are considering their non Leaf options.

Why worry about winning more then 1 at this point.

Win 1 is what the objective is, see what happens after that.

I'm not worried and one Cup would be nice. I never thought it would be easy, but more modest predictions and cautionary posts were not very popular, and a stark contrast to what others talked about.

If Nylander was a top pairing Dman the situation would be similar .. That is why so many feel the signing of Marner should result in Nylander being moved for defense help and better salary cap management by position usage.

Okay, then look at top 4 forwards and top D.

Pitt - 36.5 Million (51%)
  • Added Hornqvist (4.25)
Tor - 44.5 Million (53%)
  • Added Rielly (5.0)

All that I was pointing out was that a team's top players can be paid a large percentage of the cap and still be a contender.

You can do this comparison for most of the Stanley Cup Champions over the last 5-6 years and the numbers are pretty similar.

Everyone is just freaking out because the Leafs players are being paid so much, in a year or 2 the numbers will not look so big.

I may be alone in this but I don't see Panarin as a Marner replacement at all.
Perhaps I haven't watched him as often as others but he struck me as more of a shooter.

Yikes that really puts it into perspective. Matthews and JT are no where near as good as Malkin / Crosby were at that stage. Marner might be equal to Kessel (he should have won the Smyth when he won the cup) and Nylander, well who knows with him.

True but all those contracts were signed in the past - the next wave of contracts are going to be even expensive
