Rumor: Marner blocked a trade to Carolina for Rantanen

Thank God. Rantanen on the Leafs would have been disgusting and he's exactly the type of forward they need. A playoff-built performer.

First Leafs pick Tavares instead of strategically prioritizing Pietrangelo now this.

1. He did not refuse to extend. He said not in season. He said so from the start. I don't know why anyone is surprised.

2. On what planet does it make sense for him to accept a trade to anywhere right now?

3. If the Leafs really don't want him, he will see teams line up for him on July 1st.

3. The Leafs can pretend all they want but this was their mistake from the start so kick rocks....

4. I would bet that most or all the players in that room would side with him. business is business.

Im not so sure. Im thinking he goes shorter like 3x13.5, then he can sign his monster deal in 3 years once the cap has gone up more.

it could very well be nonsense. but why would he want to stay someplace that doesn't want him? why would the leafs decide to want him after trying to trade him? at what point does it become detrimental (even with everyone being professional & saying the right things?)

maybe rags fans can chime in about the trouba trade, or nucks fans with miller or luongo. of jackets fans about carter. just seems like breaking up with somebody that won't move out until the lease expires, after they caught you cheating on them, and trying to get you back.

That's not what I read. The team said their first choice was Marner to sign but since he won't negotiate until the off season they did not want to take that chance so they tried to see if Rantanen would sign. Also if the team really believed that Marner will walk and if they believed in Rantanen they would have gone with Carolinas plan B with the Leafs of Knies +.

Once again I am not disputing the facts I am disputing who is at fault. He won't sign and they can't trade him and none of that is his fault. The team gave him that clause and the 1 guy who said "hey maybe its time we re-examine the whole big 4 thing".....Shanny fired him before he could. Then Shanny let his full no move kick in. Then both Matthews and Nylander were given big time deals yet Marner is expected to take less and do the team a favour.....

The team messed this up and now are blaming him for it.....

Arguably the Leafs’ best player (this season for sure) so he should be paid accordingly. He has all the leverage. The Leafs either give him the contract he deserves or he walks July 1 and they get to use that cap space elsewhere. Will be impossible to replace him though.
