It's crazy that he wouldn't even say something as generic as "ofcourse I love the Leafs and the boys in the locker room, it is my intention to represent this team and the city, we will see how the business side of things sort themselves out, for now I am focused on bringing a Stanley Cup to this city".

Maybe he wasn't happy that he was asked about lifting his NTC?

Maybe he should sign a contract if he doesn't wish to be traded? Most teams would consider their options with a big player like him being unsigned the summer before he hits UFA.
Leafs tried to trade Marner and he said no. He has all the leverage. IMO Marner will sign a 3/4 year deal as a free agent on July 1 (13-14 mil) then he will sign an 8 year deal in 2-3 summers.

It doesn't feel like he's going to leave

It feels like he's going to leverage UFA and potentially a strong playoff run to bleed us dry. He doesn't want to leave, he wants to cash out in Toronto

Rantanen signing yesterday was the best case scenario for Mitch, there's no one competing with him for top dog on the market come July 1. Teams will throw themselves at Marner and he will use that to get 13+
This is, I think, exactly why he hasn't signed yet. He probably wants to stay with the Leafs, I believe that. But signing before July 1 is leaving money on the table, and I think we've seen enough to know that's not something he or his agent has a stomach for.

Only an idiot takes less money than they are worth.

I don't see Steve down in accounting asking for a pay cut so Stacy can send her son for extra ballet lessons.

The issue is that the NHL salary cap is horrible

"Only and idiot takes less.."

Every single star player could go to UFA and use it as leverage to squeeze every extra penny out of their organization and certainly would get more money. Mcdavid, Kucherov, Mackinnon ...could easily have gotten more if they went to the market. How many do it? Marner did it last contract and is gearing up to do it again.

Marner not only did it last contract but him and his agent released a rumor he was negotiating to sign with the same Swiss Team Matthews played for, and then also released that he received two offersheets to apply more pressure. Of course afger resigning with the Leafs, Marner and his agent refused to ever answer if the offersheets were for more money than what he ultimately got from Toronto. We all know they weren't because Mitch would've loved to tell the world he took less to sign in Toronto.

Additionally, Marner doesnt want an 8 year contract. He was a contract like Matthews. He wants a 4 year contract. So in 4 years he can maximize one more time on a bigger annual salary with a cap increase.

This is also something every NHL star player could do and it would almost certainly guarantee they maximize there money but very few do it.

Mcdavid signed for 8x12.5 for 100 million

Matthews signed 5x11.625
He then signed for 4x13.25

So in 8 years he will have 98 million

But... had COVID not occurred, Matthews probably would've pulled a substantial amount more in than Mcdavid in the 8 years.

It’s not as bad as it’s made out to be from the other article I read

Apparently the leafs said that Carolina is asking to trade for you and wants to sign you but our intention is to sign you and keep you here.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.
Huh?

The Leafs approached Marner to ask him if he waives his NTC but told him that they don't want to trade him?

Marner talks about being asked to waive at 2:37.

Yeah, this is what he said about it “I wasn’t focused on it. I had a feeling that maybe something might happen,” Marner said, visibly more emotional than after a regular ol’ loss. He allowed a deep sigh. “But, yeah, I’m here to play hockey with this team, like I said, and I’m focused with this team. And that’s what I can tell you.”

According to Friedman, yes that is what happened. It was his report that precipitated this thread.
I'm still confused... Why would any team approach a player they don't plan to trade to discuss about this?
You don't plan to trade a player, you just say no and hang up the phone... No need to talk with the player.

Sounds more like Leafs PR.

Friedman says the team had to ask because it was Rantanen; he did describe it a very professional, but sure, it is possible that is Leafs PR.

Proabably because he's a UFA to end the season and hasn't negotiated with the team thus far

It's the leafs coming up to him and saying "hey, we'd like you to stay but if you want to leave there's a chance to get out now"

Guys like him who don't sign early extensions and say they don't want to negociate during the season are 95% going to test UFA. I guess Marner is even past the stage of bullshitting the media.

There's absolutely no way he's in Toronto next year. We saw the same exact aituation happen so many times.

You're underestimating how low winning the Stanley Cup is on the priority list for MLSE. I predict they squeeze Marner's number down a little bit but still bring him back at a number too high.

Leafs got screwed by COVID more than most teams because of the timing with their team build.

They never benefited from the period where those RFA contracts would have deflated and allowed them to load up.

With that said, the biggest mistake Dubas made was underrating the market value of Matthews. He apparently could have had him at 8 by 12M or something close to that, but thought it was too steep. Then Matthews started strong and there was fear about what Arizona might do in the offseason, and the price shot way up. This was covered by Friedman around the time he signed.

That completely threw off their entire cap structure because they had Marner thinking he was the Kane to Matthews Toews. They never got the term needed to benefit from cap inflation, and then COVID stopped cap inflation completely during the few years the Leafs had to build around those contracts.
If Dubas wasn’t a worthless, garbage GM, he would habe stiff armed both of them and made them either sit or sign. Instead, he did it to Willy - and it worked in that case.

As soon as Paul Marner opened his mouth, Dubas should have punished mitch. He had all the power to set an example and build the culture of the team but not only did he cave but he caved in the worst way. All the cards were in his corner and he still signed that joke of a deal.

Dubas ruined all chances of the leafs ever wjnning. Not in salary cap hockey. Now watch them resign Marner for 14m, lose more depth then rince and repeat.

..... I doubt it was like that. I think Leafs would love to get out from Dubas stupid nmc.
You think a player like that wasn't going to get a nmc from any other Gm? Lol.

Treliving handed a nmc to Tanev and a M-NTC to Kampf, OEL, and Max Domi then a NTC that turns into a M-NTC for McCabe.
