Post-deadline, there are always stories seeping out … some things that don’t happen, some that did. One that continues to evolve is what happened before Mikko Rantanen was traded from Carolina to Dallas.

The Hurricanes initially asked for Mitch Marner in return for Rantanen. Because it was for Rantanen, the Maple Leafs had to consider it. They told the winger their desire is to sign him, but they had to ask in this case. As is his right, Marner declined to move, re-iterating his desire to stay.

Neither the Maple Leafs, the Hurricanes, nor Marner’s agent, Darren Ferris, would comment. But that could have been the biggest blockbuster of the week.

St. Louis will send Kyrou to Toronto pre draft and sign Marner.

Kyrou is actually pretty good and best of all, cost controlled. He’s nowhere near Marners level but you also don’t have to pay him like he is.

Meanwhile, Missouri is passing legislation that will change its income taxes.

I’m a whiner about the salary cap and the tax situation and I’ll still be one even if my team is a beneficiary. I’ll also do that while wearing a Marner jersey.

Over the last 5 years Marner has more points than:

Nikita Kucherov, Auston Matthews, Sidney Crosby, and Matt Tkachuk and then 99% of nhlers too. He’s 7th out of ~2,100 total players over the 5 years. He's in the 1% of the 1%.

No one is denying Marner can perform in the regular season. Kucherov missed an entire season and that's why Marner comes on top. The irony is the year that Kucherov missed the entire season, he came back for the playoffs and had as many pts in that post season as Marner in the past 5 years combined. And if you take his previous post season, it puts him at 66pts (2 playoffs) compared to Marner with 50pts in 8 playoffs. That's the real concern with him with the salary he makes

But yeah, he's super talented

I watched the Toronto series as an outsider over the years and I’m on board with this argument.

A challenge I have though with it is that hockey is a team sport and Toronto, especially during the early years then last year and this one, it’s a team of like 6 guys then a bunch of folk who do their best but contribute at a tiny level.

That’s just challenging team building and will suck and drag folks down. I’m not giving Marner a pass: I really don’t like the look of Tkachuk washing his face while he just takes it, some of the games he disappeared, there’s real bad in the mix.

I do agree his game thus far has not really been effective in the real season. I’d still be all over it as a gm. There’s a whole lot worse out there.

If we accept the premise as true, then I’d expect Carolina would want permission to discuss an extension with Marner prior to the trade going down.
