His numbers in the VHL were good this year.

Not really. It was bottom half in terms of starters, he only won 9 times in 38 games, and then he lost 4 straight games in the playoffs.

He then went down to the MHL only to suck so bad that Peksa took the starting job back from him after 2 games.

The fact he was in the VHL this year is already concerning enough as it is.

Villeneuve wins the Memorial Cup. 2 Primary assists in the game. Nothing special on the assists but they are the kind of simple plays we need to execute more often.

He's actually developed really well for a later round pick. Solidfying a strong 2-way game gives him more of a chance at a pro career, maybe even as a bottom pairing d-man in the NHL.

Always like to see our prospects be a big factor in winning something like the Memorial Cup.

I assume he'll start with the Growlers, but could make the Marlies at some point?

Well, he's like marner then, with a Memorial Cup.

He should start with the Marlies, and I can seriously see him passing Hollowell fairly soon if Hollowell doesn't take a major step forward in his own end.

Rindell is not better than him, and the rest are AHL contract guys who should not be given opportunities over him unless Villeneuve shows he can't handle them.

I had him going a lot earlier than the late 4th, so he is not really exceeding my expectations more than just meeting them, but he is good. May even be good enough to get into a top 4 spot some day, but more likely will be a really good two-way bottom pairing guy.

Same as Kral.

ETA 2024?

2025 seems more reasonable.

Should be treated like Kral. Two years with opportunity to perform and limited but progressively increasing expectations. Third year (this upcoming one for Kral) as a guy who should be seen as a primary call up for the Leafs and a top performer for the Marlies.

What does our D look like for the AHL next year?

Dahlstrom I figure may be our 7th because he's cheap and we don't care about development anymore but...

Kral-Villenauve
Kokkonen-Hollowell
Rubins-Rindell
X

(Not doing actual pairs, more separating LD-RD)

LD: Kral, Dahlstrom, Rubins-RFA, Kokkonen
RD: Villeneuve, Hollowell, Rindell, Niemela
I think Kokkonen and Niemela can both go back to Finland.
There’s the other RFA guys, but no news about them coming back. Rubins not signed yet could mean the same.
Dahlstrom needs waivers, I think Little Mac and Rubins do too.
Looks like there’s gonna be some depth adds.
Good chance for Villeneuve to get some rope.

I'd be shocked if he was ready that soon, but he obviously has a high drive to get better. I watched him in the 2018 season a few times and he stood out in his own zone in a bad way.. Puck watching, not moving his feet. The whole team was bad that year, but individually he had defensive problems to overcome. I didn't get to any games during covid, but obviously something clicked for him and he used his time wisely to get much better defensively.

I would expect a similar pattern with the Marlies, maybe a off year to start and then adjusting and maturing to the pro game. He could be a very good 2 way D-man in the future for the Leafs.

Scott Wheeler regarding Villeneuve's Mem Cup

William Villeneuve (Toronto Maple Leafs): Villeneuve was huge for the Sea Dogs, wearing an ‘A’ and playing on the top line while staying true to who he is. He was confident on the attack. He was the playmaker opposite captain Vincent Sevigny. He showed great vision and creativity, and I thought he was quicker at making his decisions without losing his playmaking instincts. His skating has really smoothed out in his crossovers and footwork (his feet can still trail his body in straight lines). He was really good, especially in the final (where he picked up two primary assists).

Nathan Staios (free agent): Staios just has to get signed at this point. What a gamer. He has been playing through a litany of injuries since the OHL playoffs and there were times this week where he looked like he could hardly lift himself off the ice to keep going following blocked shots and checks from behind. Then he just kept making things happen. His decision-making is suspect at times (he needs to make better choices in tough spots under pressure but some of that comes with his desire to impact the game and be the guy). But he beats forecheckers off the point with little shifts and shakes and laterally in neutral ice (which drew a couple of penalties) with head fakes. I was impressed by how fast he was in straight lines too (he’s got some power now). His footwork adjusting in and out of slight cuts in control to handle the puck off of pressure ever so slightly really pops. It was just a gutsy performance.

5'10 defenceman, but I'd like the leafs to give him an AHL deal.

From Scott Wheeler's Memorial cup notes.

winning a Mem Cup through the back door as the host team when your team got bounced in R1 of their own league playoff is almost more embarrassing then it is an accomplishment. I think St. John had something like 38 days off??

Either way, nice to see Villeneuve looking sharp. Like I said earlier, I was very impressed with him at last years Dev camp. Interested to see how he develops next year in pro.

We are out of spots to realistically give defensemen at this point, besides top 4 RD for the Marlies.

Another monster like Douglas.

"Dubas has no clue.....he only likes small guys."

I mean....do some people even think before they post?

I'd be surprised if Suthers turns into anything more than Marlies depth, and right now, I wouldn't even put him in serious consideration for a Marlies job.

We already have Chyzowski (who can play all three forward positions), Centazzo, and Suthers fighting for what is most likely just going to be one depth LW spot... And I would still like the Marlies to add Ethan Keppen who would trump all of them for a LW spot.

He can add some size for the Growlers.

He's come over to the dark side although its low cost investments and not like he is really doing a real commitment in that direction. I do think people get confused because the all dangle Kyle from his first couple of years has moved to a much different lineup construction and thats not even in doubt. Then we get to the skill vs crunch drafting habit but that may go more to percentages because I think the numbers support that outside of the top 10 or so it is a little harder to select successful physical players than successful scorers. So using picks for shooters goes farther as opposed to he ignores hitters and wants only snipers. Case in point Knies who is not quite Lucic but is a million miles from smurfdom. Give KD a chance and he will draft someone that doesn't fit the "mold" at all.

The Leafs haven't been team pond-hockey in a few years but the cost of adding prime a Foligno, or prime Simmonds is a challenge. Would he if he had the cap? I think so. His moves seem to confirm that. The commitment to a fairly soft D and top 4 forwards is a little concern but that could change with one trade and I never blamed Campbell's sv% on the D being soft. I still don't like Dubas's cap distribution but the lineup preferences make sense to me and the on ice product is maybe more on the coach than the GM at this point.

Dubas was never all dangle... I mean his first real additions were Tavares and Muzzin. It would be a good thing if we went back to not having Thornton, Simmonds, Foligno, etc. in our lineup and we went back to having Brown, Moore, etc. types. Those are also the types he chooses to draft and sign for the most part, and that is hard-working skill. Unfortunately, Hunter did not choose to draft those types, but we are now getting them back with Holmberg, Steeves, etc.

I wouldn't mind getting away from some of the offensive defensemen types like Hollowell and Rindell, but if that is the worst he does, he is better than most.

I mean this isn’t a Dubas signing this would be a Hardy signing. But Dubas has come a long way adapting his approach over the last two years

Nice to see some size. Who’s the Marlies GM, Gilliam?

Ryan Hardy, he’s the one who signed Douglas to AHL deal and then this guy. I think Douglas has an NHL Two way deal now but I can’t remember.

A lot of people are giving Dubas the credit but Hardy has made some interesting Marlies signings the last year. We’ll see if any of these guys pan out.

Yeah, Douglas has been signed by the Leafs to an ELC.

"Big, intimidating center who uses his size as an asset. An agile skater for his size who is often the hardest worker on the ice. Has potential to fill a fourth line role in the NHL"

What intrigues me is "agile skater for his size" which isn't always what you read about 6'8" players.

Signing him to a NHL contract must indicate they see some future for him.
