For a team that struggled with replacement level bottom pairings for a long time, we shouldn't be so quick to wish away competence. Dermott likely isn't ever better than a 2nd pairing guy, but certainly not replacement level.

I assume the second "Dermott" in your post was meant to be "Liljegren". The problem with getting Dermott out of the way for Sandin is that those guys aren't going to be used the same at all, Sandin wouldn't thrive in Dermott's minutes and he'll need to be sheltered by a partner who can skate where Dermott is that partner. No issue with getting the kids some time next year but Dermott is a guy that keeps them from getting exposed, he'd be great to pair one of them with

Oops, sorry about that.

But to be honest, I’m just being realistic. He’ll likely be claimed in the expansion draft. Decent player, nothing special. I get playing defense in the NHL is hard, but there are plenty of players that debut and even excel at the age of 21/22. I think Sandin and Liljegren are capable of that. They’d also save us cap space which is huge for this team. Next year, it’s time to give them a legitimate opportunity. Can’t coddle these blue chips forever when all they’ve done is dominate everywhere else.

I think the expansion draft is navigable if we want to keep him. We haven't given him enough opportunity for him to be viewed as a premium asset so I would bet that a 3rd rounder to take someone else rosterable would get it done. Most of his best showings have been filling in up the lineup as well, so I do think he'll be capable of bigger minutes.

I think Sandin has skating issues that need to be fixed before he's a real option to pencil in tbh. Long term I agree he should be a good player but don't forget we might need to replace Rielly's minutes after next year too.

I like the idea of Liljegren playing the bottom pair with Dermott next year and signing another Bogosian as a 7th D just in case.

I think Dermott might become Stralman 2.0. I don’t think it is fair to judge Dermott when he never had a solid D partner till Bogo. Beside Polak, Leafs always partnered him with someone with less NHL exp than him.

Dermott still hasn't matured into a calm unbusy game. Most NHL defensemen do by his age. It's too bad, it seems like he would.

From Day 1, Stralman had ice water in his veins to go along with his prickly personality. By the same age as Dermott is now, Stralman was on the outs in Columbus, his 3rd NHL organization.

Anyways, my point is that Dermott is liked by his staff and organization but hasn't progressed to the extent it was hoped he would. Stralman was undeniably NHL level from the start but there were other factors that had organizations move on from him.

I'd liken Dermott to the career of Carlo Colaiacovo, an enthusiastic high energy defender in his youth with issues of durability. Dermott will play elsewhere in NHL, no doubt, but at this point I don't think the team is going to be missing out on a future all star.

This board’s fascination with Dermott will never cease to amaze me. He’s a good skater and that’s about it. He’s not big or physical. He’s not a great passer and doesn’t possess a good shot. He’s not particularly good defensively. His puck handling and decision making are average at best. He’s not a guy you’d want on your powerplay or PK because there are always going to be better options. If there’s a redeeming quality to his game it’s that he’s average all around and probably won’t kill you out there when he’s on the ice.

I don’t get it, but we can agree to disagree

Forward Adam Brooks, defenceman Timothy Liljegren and forward Scott Sabourin have been reassigned to the
@MapleLeafs taxi squad. Forward Nick Robertson and defenceman Calle Rosén have been reassigned to the
@TorontoMarlies

Excited at a chance to see Robertson again with the Marlies Wednesday...
I know leafs have been shuffling taxi/marlies non-stop but you have to think they get Liljegren into a game at some point?
I cant see how resting D or just sitting Dermott/Bogosian to see what you have in timmy

Dermott's gotten just over 200 NHL games under his belt. Still only 24 and room to grow, as a lot of defensemen can take time to develop in the NHL.

There could be better options but there could also be a lot worse and defensive depth is really important for a contending team. No need to willingly give up on him yet.

Kral is now listed on the Marlies roster. Currently in quarantine I'm assuming.
I like what I saw from him in some clips this season. I didn’t know he was such a good puck rusher. He reminded me of a young John Michael Liles

nice! The Marlies are going to be must watch TV here soon. Lilly, Sandin (when helathy), Robby, SDA, Anderson, and Kral

Maybe even Hallander and Amirov if we are really lucky. Was getting pretty dry when it was just Anderson down there lol

Woll and Scott in net and the entire defense is pretty much prospects too, although Rubins, Duszak, and Hollowell look like guys we should be included in TDL deals more than hoping they make the Leafs.

EDIT: Almost forgot Alex Steeves as well.

he looks a lot bigger/sturdier than i remember
Ya I got that impression as well. In fairness, Its hard to look past his baby face, especially during his first rookie camp. So that image is what is burnt into memory, but he looked a lot more like a man than i remember him being. And definitely looked comfortable playing alongside grown ass men. Great call to let him play in the KHL I think. I get the feeling like he will have a very strong end to the Marlies season
