Pump the brakes on slamming Cowans play folks he was fine.
He made some plays, was noticeable, had the puck a ton.
On the shootout choice Canada couldn’t beat that goalie conventionally, good on him trying to switch it up.

Guy is 19 years old and is a top prospect. The way some
of the Bob Mackenzie’s on here are talking is like he is a failed prospect.
Give me a break, and check back in after the tournament.

Hockey Canada is terribly run when it comes to any sort of planning and preparation.

They get bailed out by the fact so many kids in Canada play hockey that the raw talent will always be there

Not so much a prospect thing but Hockey Canada thing...I have no idea how the hell Logan Thompson is not on the 4 Nation's roster.

Don’t really get the concern with what Cowan’s doing in big minutes at a week long tournament, his job in our competitive window is going to be an impact 3rd liner on an ELC that can be a factor on special teams and maybe put up 20/20 in year 2 or 3. The best case scenario is you’re getting Chicago Hagel on an ELC and your can revisit his role after an RFA bridge when Nylander and possibly Marner’s contracts are winding down. Whether he does good at the WJC or not isn’t going to determine whether he has it in him to take the Tampa Hagel leap or not 6+ years from now. We won’t need him to be a creative play driver for a long time, his job here is going to be to win pucks and shoot them from anywhere like people are complaining about him doing.

It's crazy that this wild narrative that he's selfish and lazy takes. He's super competitive and far from lazy but I guess we see a couple shifts and make the narrative stick in our minds.

The funny thing is he's one of the best and most dangerous PK players in the entire OHL and he doesn't get a sniff there on that team.

He's a great player on a team struggling and people are ready to just give up just because of a few games... it's wild. He's not perfect and sometimes he will make mistakes or try to score a goal that doesn't work. Sometimes he'll miss a shootout attempt too!

What's funny too is that these are the same kinda takes that were said about Kadri at his WJC years ago. He ended up being one of the best NHLers from that team and with one of the most successful careers. Leafs prospects always get more scrutiny in these types of settings.

Cowan has even said he models his game after Kadri.

I just see a kid who needs to simplify his game a little. He has great vision, is good at passing to his teammates, but just needs to use them a little more, instead of trying to do too much himself... and that's normal for a kid his age, he'll learn, and when he has better linemates he will learn to trust them too. I'm not worried about him at all, he's had some great moments.

Not many of our prospects have taken a step forward this year. Some have taken a step back.

None of these players had high expectations but, doesn't seem to be much there with:

Ryan Tverberg
John Fusco
Joe Miller
Topi Niemala
Roni Hirvonen
Viyacheslav Peksa
Roni Hirvonen
Nick Moldenhauer
Hudson Malinoski

Not sure any are worthy of contracts or extensions.

Tverberg, Niemela, Hirvonen all should get extensions... not because there is the expectations of big NHL futures, but they are useful AHLers, and we have RFA control. Unless of course they ask to go back to Europe or....

Any reason why steeves couldn’t be a bozak level C? I don’t watch marlies

But 6 foot just turned 25 too good for the AHL it appears by Stats. Why is he not up for holmberg? I really don’t get it. Is there obvious flaws in his game?
Steeves doesn’t play enough C to be considered at that position, imo.
And Bozak level is a high standard, I’d be happy if Cowan gets there.
He’s more of a north south winger, who capitalizes on gaining control along the boards and working his way to the front of the net.
As to why he doesn’t a chance? It’s beyond me, really.
I think the main barrier really is being in a system belonging to a strong contender, who can find 3rd/4th line guys for mon dollars who’ve already gone through their learning curves at that level. So, when he’s got his chances, he’s had to outplay incumbents which he hasn’t. And until this year, he was waiver exempt so it was an easy depth call. I do think with more rope he’s just as valuable and likely to produce as maybe 4-5 guys on the team, but there’s perceived urgency that he hasn’t provided.
I would say that from about the 3rd lines 3rd best player on down, and second half of the third pair, that things are probably pretty fungible in terms of overall contribution from incumbent NHLers and a whole lot of AHLers.
In house, I’d say that about Steeves and probably the top4 Marlies D.

I would argue Niemela is the only truly useful one out of those, but I would say that if you don't believe in any of them having an NHL future the roster spots could be better used by other players with either greater potential or slightly older players who can contribute better for AHL wins and possibly NHL depth.
