Big loss for the Marlies. I hope he kills it with Anaheim. I would not be surprised if he's a head coach in the AHL/NHL very soon.

A large defender with limited puck skill and spending a lot of time in his end is what I am reading.

Not sure he has a spot on the team soon and is already 23/24 if I am not mistaken.

Anyway, a 6th on him is not an issue, have just seen some people excited about him and don't understand the hype.

Best case, he seems like a limited D man who will top out as a bottom-pairing D.

I hope he becomes more, just seems unlikely he will learn how to play with the puck so late into his development.

Hopefully, I am wrong, I am just a lot more excited about a few of our other D prospects with much higher ceilings.

I would be thrilled if he's a 3rd. pairing defender.

Can you imagine, not throwing away picks/prospects at the deadline to get a 3rd. pairing defender?

We threw away a 6th for a maybe, we didn't draft this player.

Anyway, a 6th is not a big deal, and it is better than getting a 3rd pairing D like Edmundson at the deadline, but a long shot still cost us a pick this year.

I hope his upside is more, as I said, just from what I've seen, I am not impressed.

Time will tell, I just see some rosters where he is penciled in and don't understand it.

We all hope he's the next Adam Foote, but realistically, what would you consider a win for a 6th. round pick in 2026?

The way he was hyped when he came here, anything less than a top 4 who shuts down the other team's top lines is a bust.

Using logic, if we can get a season out of him, and he plays well, then it is a win.

I think that is unlikely even, but we shall see.

If we get a couple of good AHL seasons out of him it's a win.

If he only makes the AHL, he's a discussion for AHL fans.

Odds are low you get very few games from a 6th. rounder ... last 20 Leafs drafts

So, with Grebyonkin (Grebenkin?) coming over to North America what do people think are reasonable expectations for him this upcoming season?

Interesting quote:
“There’s nothing special there. In general, the NHL plays even more simply than ours. They don’t invent anything. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re a star or a fourth-liner.” -Nikita Grebenkin

It’s a very simple game with classic “dump and chase”, just like he experiences in the KHL.

“I’m not saying I’ll go to the NHL now and immediately become a star, but everything’s going well with my inner confidence.” – Nikita Grebenkin

Since essentially none of us have actually seen him play, it's really hard to know what would constitute realistic expectations. I'm just glad he'll be coming over to begin his development in North America.

I'd think he is #4/5 to be called up.

Timmins (likely already the #7), Rifai, Niemela, Villeneuve, and Kokkenen all likely get a look ahead of him (or should at least).

There are some defensively responsible D there, but most of them are likely better with the puck, which is something we will need as well.

Like I said, hopefully, he is better than what I've seen (only clips), but he just looks big and nothing else.

He hasn't even looked good defensively in the clips I've seen, so likely I need to see more of him.
Keeping expectations reasonable but he has an obvious skill set. He is a giant, will throw weight around, set a ncaa single season block shots record. Second was 35 blocks behind this year.

That’s fair, I do know we have some users who watch the international leagues a bit more, so hoping they see this

The puck has to be in your end to block shots, I am not as impressed with this as some others are.

He is deployed in defensive scenarios obviously, so maybe it is not that big of a deal, but from all the clips I've seen, he looks bad.

I don't care about his height/him throwing weight around if he can't play NHL hockey.

Maybe he will be great, but he seems like a career AHLer, I never understood the hype.

Time will tell obviously, but I've seen him penciled in as an option next year for some, and I'd hope our management is not dumb enough to try to force him into the lineup when Benoit is 3LD.

Most new Leafs get some hype from fans. Dude is a project who is fits into the "two years away from being two years away" cliché.

Yeah, in this case the hype came from outside.

I really wasn't impressed, other than his stats being what they are, and being named best defensive defenseman in NCAA Hockey East.

I'm not sure Hockey East is that good, so any hype from there might be suspect.

... Remember can't have it both ways. ...

I think he could push for a roster spot opening night depending on the forward additions over the summer.

He's been playing against men.
He's 21, 6'2", 192 lb. Nikita Grebyonkin - Stats, Contract, Salary & More
Perhaps more man than boy?

He's never played on N/A sized ice though

If he's good enough he plays but I wouldn't mind him, Minten and Cowan competing for a job and letting the best man win

I definitely think we could easily open up a 3rd line spot if need be

If he can skate up and down the ice he should be able to land a spot on the team.

It isn't like the team is loaded past 6th. forward.
