So the young guys know how to win playoff series? Can't wait for them to join the big club and get tainted by our core 4. They'll teach them the bum ass ways of being perennial first round losers

I was thinking maybe Cowan & Minten can make the team out of training camp, but I am thinking it might not be good for their development NOT to be surrounded by this current group. Let them season one more year, then Tavares and Mitch are gone and we start a new era with them along with Matthews, Nylander and the cap flexibility to make smart moves and improve the depth of the roster.

Pretty sure Marner has won his share in junior hockey.......Marner was the second player (after Brad Richards in 2000) ever to win a Memorial Cup, a Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy, CHL Player of the Year, a league MVP trophy (Red Tilson Trophy) and a league playoff MVP trophy (Wayne Gretzky 99 Award) in the same season.

Minten for sure is making it. We need a 3C and I would love to see him back with Knies again.

Funny timing for you to mention these 2, because Friedge said on his pod today he thinks the org believes Cowan and Minten will factor into the team's plans next season.

I am not surprised to hear that; we need the influx of talent on cheap contracts to balance the cap. I just don't want Marner to influence the development of Cowan and Minten.

I'd prefer to have him get at least a half season with the Marlies to acclimate to pro hockey, and Cowan to stay in junior his last year to get a year stronger. The off season will probably give us some clues to their plans.

Cowan has nothing left to prove in junior. I think he’s making the team out of camp.
I think posters forget that he had a good training camp last year and was a late cut. He was never going to make the team last summer, but he was already a pleasant surprise.

For those taking note, he also lined up at C last summer. At the time I thought it was to balance the lines but since then he has played C in junior on a number of occasions. So I am starting to think the 2C dream is not completely nuts.

The only downside for Minten in making the Leafs. is that he would get better chances to develop his offense in the AHL.

Elliott Friedman said on Kyper and Bourne today that the leafs had a couple teams expressing interest in Hildebeast and the leafs flat out shut that down leading him to believe he is in their plans at some point next season.

He had a pretty good season and he's turning 23 years old. He definitely should be in the plans, which is why it pissed me off a little bit they refused to play him this season with the Leafs when they had plenty of chance to do so.

We were really not good defensively this year. I wouldn't want to to expose him to that kind of play in front of him in his first year playing pro in NA. Kinda like when we gave Kaskisuo his first game and the team played their worst hockey in front of him.

I preferred that he just had a full year playing in the AHL.

I mean, he played in front of a group of D in the Marlies, that was worse than ours.... so he was exposed to that kind of play, just at a lower level.

That's fair. I still don't think it's good for development to bring someone up too fast and have him get lit up.

Let him dominate the lower level. He had a solid year but I wouldn't say dominant.

I thought he said the Leafs are going to look for a veteran 1B to play behind Woll.

Maybe a cheap veteran 1B who wouldn't block Hildeby in any way?

It would have been 1 maybe 2 games. Defensively the Leafs were more than fine. Let him get his feet wet and see how he can rise up to the occasion. Leafs chose to play Jones on a back to back instead. Hildeby was on the bench, so it's not like they disrupted his AHL starts.

They are 100% going to get someone that can sign a 1-2-3 year deal to compete with Woll, and knowing that he always gets injured, Hildeby will get his shot sooner rather than later. And if Hildeby shows he's the real deal, you can make a decision after that. Ideally you have Woll and Hildeby in 2025.

The thing is, Marner was heavily insulated by players who were hard-nosed and hard forecheckers.
