BU lost in OT and thus, Webber is now free to sign. Webber was the defenseman on that 1 v 1. His gap control there was pretty bad, he should have been a lot more aggressive on the entry instead of just letting him walk in and shoot.

We need to put more value on skating, I don't care how big you are if you can't skate well you can't keep a decent sized gap and you give away chances like that

A goalie shouldn't be letting a goal go in five hole from that far out and on the shooters off side. Webber probably could've attacked him sooner but he also had to watch for that other guy a bit longer since it looked like he was gonna blow by the BU player for a 2 on 1.

The goalie wasn't good but if you give up ground like that bad stuff is going to happen

He needed to step up and close up that gap but seemed to lack the ability or had the willingness to do so

Has anyone mentioned Easton Cowan in this thread lately?

He's currently on a 41 game point streak in the OHL, not too bad IMO

Rielly is a phenomenal skater and plays a gap like that. There's more to it than pure skating ability, he's just going to have to figure out how to use his reach and be aggressive

Not the best look....playing defense is pretty unforgiveable at times.

I remember watching a stretch of Vegas hockey this year and often enough I was saying "Wow Pietrangelo f***ed up on that play" - I kind of wonder if he was playing hurt as he's been out a while now but it just goes to show you even the best in the world can mess it up.

Webber has some work to do, maybe 1-2 years in the AHL helps. I think we need to look at our development staff in the AHL - Futa talked about how they had a ton of confidence they could fix issues in LA when they drafted kids but we've not been able to draft and develop defenseman.

Maybe Muzzin / Gio could be apart of that.
Hard to develop defenseman when we never draft any. Niemela, Kokkonen, Villeneuve, Chadwick, Koster. Pretty skimpy the past 5 years.

Just turned 22. His floor is third pairing, ceiling up one pair.
Yeah but like say Stralman, Gunner etc. We give late rounders a long time to develop. I don't think he becomes top 4 and by the time he plays he will be 23.

That's it for 5 years? And if a stud C falls to us in the first we still have to take him. Defense takes years to develop.

Not the end of the world though, is it?
If he has a good summer and puts on sone weight, he’s viable to make to the team next year or be first man up.

I guess we dont pick defenders cause we are so bad at it?
We do pick defenders. We're not going to get perfect distributions of F/D/G in every draft, as it depends on the strengths of the particular draft, the team's needs, and who is available where you happen to pick.

There are 4 defenders on the Marlies right now that are from the draft. Rifai was a free agent pick up developed by us, and might have a play into next season. Webber wasn't a draft pick of ours but will be developed by us, assuming he signs as expected. Basically 6 of the 7 D on the Marlies are mostly drafted/developed by us.

Niemela is probably the only one that has a chance to be a top 4+ D if things line up, but Kokkonen and Villeneuve have ok potential to keep improving. Chadwick is still a long ways away so we'll see.

100%...He played it more like a 2 on 1 which he should have... I'd be worried about the guy on the left breaking free of his check also as it looked like he was going to... Defencemen have a split second to make a decision like that... if he'd attacked the puck carrier and it resulted in him sending the other guy in all alone then he would have been faulted for that... much tougher play for any defenceman than it looks to us post-play analyzers...

No. He left out Rindell, Fusco, and Loponen. He also left out that we drafted 8 defensemen in the 2 years prior to his cutoff, including using our 1st and 2nd on D both years.
I was clearly referencing defenceman we drafted and are still developing. The three others you mentioned are no longer in the mix, and I think it's fair to say Sandin and Durzi are past the development stage.

True, but he looked like he was worried he was going to get burned and just kept on backing in, I'd prefer Him try holding the blue line even if it bites him in the butt
