Marlies, Cyclones, and Prospect Discussion

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

It'll be interesting to navigate the prospect turnover this summer.

Of U25 prospects, they'll have Kokkonen, Hirvonen, Niemela, Villeneuve, and Hildeby expiring as RFA's. Tverberg still has one-year term from the '20 class and can hopefully return closer to 23-24 form. I can envision movement on Niemela mainly, but could see the others back.

Cowan, Chadwick, and Valis will turn Pro and Sharpe is probably the main consideration to jump from ECHL to AHL full time - Kressler and Voit too I suppose. Holinka and McCue are late '05's so they could even do it too if TOR decides. They have all of Koster, Miller, Fusco, Schingoethe, Moldenhauer, and Malinoski in the NCAA now - a few probably expire and are non-prospects; but I wonder about Miller and Malinoski imminently the most. Do they bring Obvintsev over too? He's completely on the sidelines in his current org

Then you get into the FA class, which will largely be NCAA-based because most CHL OA's are going there instead of Pro. Valis was one, and the only CHL find in the league, so far. I wonder about Sam Alfano still. Tre scouted an Erie-Owen Sound game awhile back post McCue to Flint trade. TOR has been linked to two of the marquee NCAA names in Haymes and Dorwart, and also D Caleb MacDonald . They also had Hutson and Ricketts at Dev Camp last year - the latter being older and more of an AHL deal consideration. They could get in on the Euro market too, but haven't been too solidly linked to anyone from what I've seen yet.

25-26 Marlies:
Forwards: Barbolini (AHL), Cowan, Hirvonen, Kressler, Quillan, Shaw (AHL), Tverberg, Valis, Voit (Holinka, Malinoski, McCue, Miller, + prospect and vet FA's)

Defense: Benning, Chadwick, Kokkonen, Parsons (AHL), Rifai, Sharpe (AHL), Villeneuve, Webber (Niemela + prospect and Vet FA's)

Goalies: Akhtyamov, Hildeby, Peksa (Obvintsev)
Great post!

Thank you. 🙏

After seeing Myers again, I wouldn't be against giving Niemela a sniff at the nhl level. I heard he might go back to Finland but idk. I realize hes under performed, but Myers is just really bad and were in a position to give a guy a chance as #6. Even Villeneuve, could deserve a chance.

Myers is limited but has his attributes.
Huge guy that will hit, block shots and he has a good shot.

I think he is fine as a third pair partner for OEL.

Always nice when the deadline passes and this thread gets back to being about prospects lol.

Hard to know what to make of this guy right now. I just hope he can make the MHL -> VHL -> KHL jump fairly quick and he'll be encouraging to track - was pretty young within that 2024 Draft class.

A few of our 2024 picks seem like serious long-term plays where they might not really standout or be heard from much for 3-4 years, but they hopefully just keep showing good things as they rise through the levels. Johansson, Plesovskikh, and Lahey definitely fit that bill and Holinka could too depending on the approach they take (if he ends up back in Czechia or NCAA even).

And Sam McCue is having a year.

While not as attention grabbing as McCue's goal output, the 1000ft view has Mayes showing some very interesting progression

Johnson made his debut with the Marlies and was a lot better than expected. Gritty, goes into corners and plays hard, has some wheels. It's crazy how good you have to be to be given away for future considerations.

How is the Ben Danford pick looking? Would we have taken someone else in hindsight?

I hope he can crack the 2026 World Juniors Roster.

Good. Got an assist tonight, but he is solid. However he has to score more. Hopefully, with the change in team Canada management, he will be on the team. It depends a great deal on the offense though.

If he’s our Tanev clone we won the lottery on this pick

I've heard some of the production drop off with Cowan is attributed to cheating less for offense, I guess he wants to tighten things up in hopes of making the NHL team.
Also the knights have a very strong forward group this yr
They also aren't blowing teams out like last yr.
More of a defensive first team.
