If I Scheifele I am telling team Canada to get f***ed, and I am going to Mexico.
If he wasn’t good enough to be picked originally (which he obviously should have been) too bad now.

Yes , politely decline stating you have already made plans .

Exactly. Politely decline by telling them to go f*** themselves.

While that would feel good, it would crater his chances of going to the Olympics. Which I think he cares quite a bit about.

However, technically, and if it was in a vacuum, yes this is the correct response.

If he wanted to go originally (sounds like he did), then there's no reason why he shouldn't happily join the team

I hope Crosby isn't injured though, as a Canadian fan

The only problem with that is he would almost certainly be left off of the Olympic roster next year if he didn't accept this (if it happens)

Meh the Olys isn’t best on best either, IOC is corrupt, and in the european time zone for games is a buzz kill. Also too many teams, too many games for a mid season tourney.
An Olympic Gold Medal is a once in a lifetime experience that many NHLers will never get to experience. For Crosby he'd be going for #3, Doughty too.

For Scheifele and Morrissey this is their window of opportunity. I'm sure it's a huge motivator in their play. By the next Olympics they may be on the older side.

12 teams would be better with Russia and Belarus, but not if Sweden and Finland withdraw. At least Nik will get the chance to represent Denmark.

IOC is corrupt. Most international governing bodies are.

Just don't let Don Sweeney choose the team. Seems like Stevie Y/Joe Sakic would have more credentials.

I don't agree with this, I think it is the definitive best-on-best country v country. IOC is definitely not great though hahaha.

Timezones are what they are, we're not the only continent.

If you want NHL players in the Olympics then the games happen when they happen. A lot of guys might want to win Olympic gold as much as they want to win the Stanley cup.

And not getting picked may make him mad and want to show Team Canada how much they fudged up not picking him.
I hope he gets to play in the Olympics. If Mc David and Crosby are the top 2 centers, Point #3, I don't know if Scheifele gets in as center and RWers there's probably Mackinnon, Marner, Reinhart. I'd hope that Team Canada gives him the chance to have the same effect Ducky did in the 1987 Canada Cup. There's a lot of politics in Hockey Canada. Doug Armstrong is the representative I believe on the 4 Nations Team.

Interesting back and forth.

Just to level set here I want to say my give a shit factor on this topic is a 2 out of 10.

Next order of housekeeping is I will admit I am a time zone Diva. I don't watch any west coast NHL games because they are past my bedtime. I PVR them and possibly get to them depending on my schedule. In some ways Europe time zone would be better because I would probably be awake for the morning games but I doubt I would be at home since I am employed still.

Let me break down a few issues in play here as I see them.

Timing of the tournament. I am opposed to any in season break for the 4 nations, the Olympics, even the goofy all star scrimmage to a lesser extent. Playing non NHL tournaments during the NHL season is my number 1 objection to this. Play it in the off season like they do for Basketball or Football (Euro cup and World cup). Don't compress the NHL schedule to shoe horn in these events.

Best on Best. I don't mind seeing the best go at each other as long as they are into it. I am just as interested to see Canada and America at the 4 nations as I would be at the Olys. Not having Russia in either is a buzz kill since they are one of 5 nations in the mix to win. Now I think in Hockey best on best really peaked in the 70's and 80's when the Soviet Red Army was arguably the best team in the world. Maybe from 1972 to 1987 these competitions were the only place we could see the best hockey players in the world competing. Once the wall came down, Russians and Czech's were allowed in the NHL I was always comfortable knowing the best hockey players in the world were all in the NHL. I still liked to see the top National teams compete but the mystique was different.

To the Olympics. I realize its a big deal to some of the players, to me they have made a commitment to their NHL teams and they are getting paid big money for that job. The compromise is play this in the fall (not going to happen but that is when this should go down).

As I said my give a f*** factor is a 2 out of 10. If this is what the league and players agree to then knock themselves out. I will try to keep an open mind to the 4 Nations cup and who knows maybe the hockey will be great. If it is really good and I find myself getting into it I will come back here and say I was wrong.

The Olys seems like a long commitment timing wise so I'm still not sure I am sold that level of break in NHL action is good for the NHL season but it seems to be a big deal to the players so the owners are giving in on it.

Oh my yes, I agree with you here. For the 4 Nations, I feel it's better than the All Star game... but my interest was still almost 0. Seeing Sid in the Maple Leaf yesterday (I caught the last half of the game) did warm my heart a bit. The pace/intensity of the game was higher than expected as well.

Hahaha I hear that. With my current family schedule, late games actually work much better for me. Sadly, I miss a bunch of earlier games. I don't have much free time for sports at all these past few years and have stopped watching NHL/NBA pretty much altogether. I can never seem to give up the Jets, though, so I do catch as much as I can.

100% with you on this, I don't care for the mid-season break to feature an intense tournament. Have the World Cup of Hockey or the Olys before/after the NHL season.

Not having Russia is definitely a turnoff, geopolitical issues aside. I still feel that best-on-best national team competition is our greatest opportunity to see stacked teams from each nation face off. We haven't seen a proper international competition in 11 years.

Still not sold on the 4 Nations stuff, and feel it's just a gimmicky All Start game replacement. Sort of like the last "World Cup of Hockey" having gimmick teams. Give me best-on-best national teams (all of them) and I'm in.

I can remember being in school and having classes shut down to watch the Forsberg goal against Canada in the shootout.

The 1996 World Cup has to be one of the biggest upsets in hockey.

Crosby's Golden Goal is the modern iconic moment in Canadian Hockey history. I'm sure there is a whole generation of players who would love to have that experience. The World Championships don't feature the best players, because many of them are still battling for the Stanley Cup.

In Asia, like the Original best on best Olympics in Nagano, the time differential is too hard on fans, but the Olympics in Europe will bring back some of that fever.

I agree about Russia, but I just watched the Unified States beat Canada in the 1992 Olympics, with Lindros, Juneau, Sean Burke in net. Damn those Russians. They should be in the tourney, maybe the end of the war this year changes some tunes.

I'd love to see some of our Jets have this Olympic experience. There's nothing like it. When patriotism is bigger than the Stanley Cup.

I tuned in last night for the 1st and 2nd period and found it too be pretty good although the teams were getting use to playing together so it was a bit choppy at times. My son has taken to sleeping to the couch due to some PTSD from Horror movies two summers ago. That means we are lights out at 9:00 (ish) and that's if for Sports on tv.

My son is in grade 11 playing High school hockey and daughter is in grade 7 doing gymnastics and club volleyball. She has an insanely busy schedule. I watch about 30% of the Jets games and no other sports on TV accept maybe Sunday night NFL football if the game is good.

I have to admit last night it was nice to see some best on best hockey. I agree this will probably get allot more serious when its the Olympics just because that medal is universally recognized. Still best on best is pretty interesting.
