Seems like Marcus Pettersson will be one of the best UFAs on the trade block this deadline and also he's the age where signing him for 5-6 years would probably be the best deal you are getting for a D in UFA.

Dubas is the GM, so I bet we get crushed in the trade, but he should return more.

If Vancouver gives up their 1st and Hoglander, I'd be stoked on that return.
I think I would do Höglander and a second, but not a first.

Hoglander even though he’s a frustrating player, has sky high potential

He also has a 3 x 3 deal upcoming and is regularly getting scratched.

Hoglander is just there for cap purposes.

Hoglander has played every game this year, and he played 80 games last year, missing 2 to a facial injury.

I don't think he's been scratched for nearly 2 years now?

So, on a very good team Hoglander is putting up Rakell, Bunting and Beau numbers? At 23 he's not all of a sudden going to be a bonafide top 6 player and we have tons of middle 6 players that can't contribute enough as it is.

I'd rather picks and or prospects instead of seeing him suffer on this shit team and shit coach. A player like Hoglander at his age is not going to be anything more than a decent roster spot for the next 3+ years, unless the plan is to flip him next year, after Sullivan ruins him, for an underwhelming return.

The Penguins are not exactly rebuilding, they're re-tooling, no? Teams like that are looking for contributing players, not picks or prospects. And that's precisely why Hoglander fits the bill - he clearly has ability to play, he's not consistent in his production/performance, and players like him get moved all the time in trades because that's what teams are willing to trade/take flyers on. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. A similar player in Brannstrom wasn't tendered a QO in Ottawa, went to Colorado, didn't perform well, and got traded to Vancouver... and it's working here.

It's also not about Hoglander being a massively valuable piece. It's just the reality of what to expect in return for a UFA. Teams aren't going to give up good young players for UFAs. Two seasons ago, a few posters on the Canucks board created trade target lists of 22-25 year old players who weren't exactly untouchables yet due to consistency/performance issues, and one of them was Filip Hronek. That's paid off, but it could've easily been worse for the Canucks if they had targeted someone else. Other players were Newhook and Kotkaniemi. Hoglander is probably on a list like that for tons of teams.

If Hoglander isn't this massively valuable piece, it also means he's not pulling off Pettersson straight up. Pettersson is the best rental defenseman on the market and is very likely pulling off a 1st in value. If Hoglander doesn't have that value, then a 1 for 1 deal isn't going to cut it.

He's basically just a grittier Kapanen. I wouldn't hate to trade for him but he better be coming with a solid futures package as well.

I wouldn't hate to have him, it's just that we have 3 or 4 of his type now, grab the picks or prospects instead.

Hoglander is coming off a 24 goal year as a 22 year old. The whole team has had a rough start, Hoglander is playing fine.

Are any of the players you named a similar age to Hoglander? Had any of them even made the NHL by the age Hoglander had a 24 goal season?

That's because we know Dubas is gonna screw it up
Any team hearing Pettersson for just a 1st should shut up and be grateful.

NJD doesn't even need defense and I'd still want to buy Pettersson at that price.

The only thing he doesn't do is QB a power play, which most contenders already have a guy to do and paying for would simply be a waste.

Yes and all 24 of those goals were even strength. He couldn't get on the power play to save his life.

And this year he is mired on the fourth line.

I would expect Pittsburgh to win a Hoglander+ for Pettersson deal in the long run but time will tell. If it happens.

24 goals on 20% shooting, so last year was his outlier year, as he is not a 20% shooter and is currently down to 9.5 now... This is a hard no for me personally, I'd rather take a chance on picks and prospects than another player that we have multiple copies of right now.

That's cool. I just want to see Hoggy get away from Tocchet and have a chance to develop his career. It doesn't really matter where. I have watched all of this up close.

Why would the assumption be that things would be any different with Pettersson though?

Guentzel is also a much better player than Pettersson, we're talking a 1W vs a 2nd pair D.
Pettersson will likely be the most sought-after dman on the trade market come TDL time. Super workable contract as well.
There’s Pens fans in this thread suggesting Pettersson returns what Guentzel got last year. This is what I was referring to when I said this feels like last year all over again. A late 1st and small add or 2nd and “b” prospect is his likely worth.
I suggested 1st+4th as a reasonable value, same thing with Pettersson+2nd for Pettersson straight up.

As I pointed out, Jake's value at the TDL last year was affected by Dubas not granting teams the other teams the opportunity to discuss an extension, so at the time of the trade, the team had to assume that he was a pure rental. And he still returned what he returned.

I put in my post that in order for Pettersson get a high return, it comes with the conditions of: granting permission to speak with his agent, putting an extension in place, and Dubas retaining 50% at the TDL. Meanwhile, we take back a cap dump. Hardly unreasonable. Pettersson is a 3rd pairing dman, Hoglander is on the 4th line with a new 3x3 coming. 1st will be a late first. If I'm mistaken on Hoglander not approaching the cap dump territory, then fine, we can pick another player like Desharnais. If it's Hoglander, we can likely send back DOC as a good fill in for Hoglander.
