Player Discussion Marco Rossi

Rossi’s camp is putting everything on 5-6 games.
No, they probably just want the first 60 games to count as well.

A "take or leave it" deal in early June is an extremely emotional response, and one that probably isn't very constructive. 3 x $5M probably isn't even on the table based on the 5 x $5M offer that was made.

Is NJ doing it with Hughes? Toronto with Knies? Anaheim with McTavish? I'm guessing negotiations haven't been super quiet with these guys who haven't signed yet.

I just think a 7x7 deal in this economy is going to be so valuable. It’s not like we’re going to have an easy solution at center to replace him. Sign him to 7x7, play him top 6 again, and a year from now people will be killing themselves to trade for that deal when Bennett is making 9.
Yep.

And honestly, if it's the $49M that he's targeting, make him take an 8th year with no $ increase (or an extra $1M) and get it closer to $6M. Not a big difference between 7 and 8 years anyway.

It's also a very tradeable contract in a couple years if they still decide he isn't a fit. When the cap is 110M it'd be like a player making 5.5M this season or something close.

Yeah it’s basically another Ek type of deal which is universally considered a steal. Again, if he’s got a way to replace Rossi that I don’t know about- I’m all ears.

Can you reshare
Contracts consist of 2 main parts: the years and the per year $'s.

Rossi wants 7 years x $7M per year.
Guerin wants 5 years x $5M per year.

If Guerin had to buckle, and meet one of Rossi's demands, while maintaining one of his, it is my opinion that he would much rather go with a 7 years x $5M per year instead of 5 year x $7M per year. Because a lower average is helpful cap-wise putting a team together, and the extra 2 years don't mean a whole lot when it's the player's late 20's.

Rossi would be the opposite, and want the 5 x $7M since it would be the same total $'s and he would get to his next contract 2 years earlier.

Therefore, I think Guerin has more of an issue with Rossi asking for $7M per year, than he does Rossi asking for 7 years.

Russo seems to think he'll be traded by the end of the month, which obviously hints at the draft. Makes you assume some 2025 draft picks will be involved, which makes you assume you're not getting a better center in return. Which would indicate that his plan is to get one in free agency.

I can't fathom trading Rossi a week before free agency begins only to not get the better replacement...you'd think he'd have to have the replacement first, or at the very least, at the same time.

Then again maybe Russo is wrong and he won't be traded in June, who knows. I just don't really see a path to getting a better long term replacement than Rossi at 7x7. Even a better center like Tavares would be a much shorter term option. Unfortunately, I think that road leads to paying Sam Bennett more than any other team. I hope Guerin is smarter than that.
