Player Discussion Marco Rossi

Rossi was one of only 3 wild skaters to play all 82 games. Wasn’t he rumored to be harboring an injury at some point too? I stepped away from hockey for a good bit after the four nations tourney so that’s an honest question.

If I was Rossi, I'd take a four year, five million dollar contract with a NMC and then walk at the end of the contract regardless. He'd be on his prime (26-27), would get a major payday and screw the Wild as they now have a major hole in their lineup and probably no one to replace him or his points.

There is no reason for him to do that at this point in time. It makes absolutely zero sense from the player point of view. This is a last resort contract before holding out and I very much doubt it would include a NMC.

He isn't eligible for a NMC for those 4 years.

Yeah because he was healthy, available and reliable. As soon as forwards started to get healthy his minutes got reduced almost instantly, his role was diminished.

Culminating in the „playoff saga“ which was just the icing on the cake on how it developed and made the double standards of the coaching staff obvious.

And please don’t forget he is a second year player. The term „sophomore slump“ exists for a reason. He worked his way out of it towards the end of the season and got rewarded with…a spot on the 4th line come the playoffs.

But again: we know very little about what is going on in these negotiations. Calling anyone stupid based on articles from beat writers is a little presumptuous.
He was playing over Eriksson Ek for basically the entire first half.

All I’m getting out of this is that Rossi has “little man syndrome” when it comes to contract negotiations because of the playoffs.

I thought he looked more hesitant and less willing to engage in puck battles sometime around Mid March, i think. Since he had been noticeably quicker and willing to engage in physical play(within reason) earlier in the season, I theorized that he was nursing something like bruised ribs, or a bad shoulder. Basically something that made it really painful to be taking hits, let alone initiating them.
I think i also heard a reporter- Russo, maybe?- suggest that he was nursing something, sort of like Freddy did the year before when he had his awful 15 point season.

Russo speculated that Rossi's drop in performance starting around March may have been caused by an injury he was nursing. Rossi confirmed it during his exit interview with the press.

Combining an injury and the "wall" that young players often tend to hit in the latter half of a season (Rossi also hit it in his rookie year), it's not surprising he played poorly and was demoted. His demotion was earned and received. Gaudreau's demotion below Rossi was earned and never received, and that's where people have a bone to pick with Hynes, and where Rossi's concern over future utilization stems from.

I think it's a lot of concern over 6 games when most of the preceding 82 games saw Rossi play top-6. The only real worry I would have if I were Rossi is that it happened to be the 6 most important games. Still, game 82 was pretty important as an elimination game, and he played top-6 there. The real concern for Rossi, if he cares about winning a Cup, should be around Hynes's personnel decisions in the playoffs and the effect it'll have on the Wild advancing, not Rossi's future role which seems fairly secure due to his own good play.
