Player Discussion Marco Rossi

I could maybe see a scenario where Cole Beaudoin is put on the table. Big strong center, probably a solid 3C long term. Just had a nice D+1 season in Barrie. Crushed the combine a year ago. He's probably 2 years away from NHL ready.

If Utah were to bring in Rossi, there isn't really a spot for Beaudoin long term behind Cooley, Rossi, and Hayton.

You are offering a lot of what I would call "spare parts" for a 23 year old top six center.

I'm just trying to make sense of this.

We should trade an arguable #1/2 C for someone that MIGHT be a #3 C? Or what are you thinking?

Would be more than Beaudoin going to Minny.

But hard to say without knowing Guerin's thoughts on Rossi. I read that Russo said on his pod that there's an 80% chance that Rossi is traded this summer because the two sides are so far apart on negotiations. He already turned down the 5x5 offer. And his usage in the playoffs didn't help things for either side.

I remember when Toronto added Kessel from Boston. They told Boston, "Hey, we're going to offer sheet this guy for these picks, so let's make a trade." I wonder if Bill Armstrong would use a similar tactic with Guerin for Rossi. Do a deal in June, or wait until July 1 and Utah can file a $9 million offer sheet for Rossi.

And then Guerin tells Armstrong to pound sand and trades him elsewhere before July 1 because you wanted to strong arm him and wouldn't offer more than Cole Beaudoin and other spare parts? That's pretty much how I see that going.

Strong arm Armstrong? Or armstrong Armstrong?

"I don't have to do shit" comes to mind immediately.

The way I see that situation going down is Guerin saying "No, f*** that. Go ahead and offer sheet him", then he'd match the offer sheet out of spite, and then trade Rossi out of spite.

Either way, I think we can all agree that Armstrong trying to do that and subsequently lowballing him will end up with Rossi anywhere but Utah

I still think the easiest path to foresee is Rossi for the best 2026 1st round pick they can get at the draft. Then Guerin knows for sure (and he likes certainty) how much money he has to play with on July 1.

If you match an offer sheet, you cannot trade the player for a period of 1 year.

Armstrong strong arm

Billy Big Balls vs Billy Strong Arm
That's a stretch...

Good point. I also think he'd be able to hold a grudge for a year.
Nah. Guerin would, apparently, just trade Rossi to the KHL to a Siberian team, while murdering all Rossi's puppies and dancing on their poor dead bodies, with drinking beer and snorting coke. And don't forget the hookers.

Rossi to Utah for a 2026 1st?

I think there would need to be a little more to that but I wouldn't be terribly opposed to it as a base

We can do that. I suspect the 1st would also be protected somewhat (top 3?). When was the last time a team traded an unprotected first, maybe Ottawa?

Flip the pick for another player?

Or just flip Rossi to someone who gives us what we want without having to make a subsequent trade with the assets you can afford to spare?

Be honest with us, if you had Rossi on your team and someone else was offering what you're offering, would you want to make a deal?

That would meet the criteria, yes, depending on how much your side would want to protect it.

Again, I'm not thrilled with the situation as my preference would be to re-sign Rossi, but based on my suspicions of what is going on, I could see it happening. I am only just guessing about Guerin wanting the full allotment of UFA dollars available though. He could easily want a player or prospect closer to the NHL back.

Can you imagine him trading Rossi for a mid 1st only to sign zero top end free agents (because why would they sign here) and then to compensate he overpays another Trenin type? That would be fun.
