What is Boston needs ?
let start with this.
Does they want to rebuild - retool - status quo - Add for a playoff spot ?
That's the big question after a response we can know more on Marchand Status

The team is in their prime years aside from Marchand and Coyle on the older side and Lorhei on the younger side.

The defense and goaltending is locked up with long term contracts. The forward group has Pasta and Lindholm signed long term but everyone else is either ELC, a pending RFA/UFA this year (most of them) or next year (Coyle) or the year after (Zacha).

So they need to rebuild the forward group. But, somehow, fast enough that 28 year old Pasta is still in his prime.

So rebuild just isn't possible. They just can't get bad enough to get out of the mushy middle, even if they wanted to. But the forward group has too many complimentary players and not enough guys to complement. It's basically Pasta, a getting up there Marchand, and role players. Role players that can be very good in a role, but they are being asked to do more because their isn't enough high end talent up front.

So yeah. I guess the answer is pray that a star forward falls from the sky?

Bruins need a retool. Look at how the Caps did this past off season by adding the cap dump Dubois and Chychrun. Who are the new Dubois and Chychrun this off season? No idea.

Yeah and you can't be sure how it's gonna work out. Not to throw shade, but for every Dubios or Seguin or Reinhart that works out you get a Dach or Newhook who doesn't do what you hoped.

Dach and Newhook are not good examples. They are young players still on the cusp of touching their prime (Bruins need players in their prime). Dubois and Chychrun are in their primes when the caps traded for them and their former teams mismanaged them.

But I get your point, sometimes it don't work out when you take on guys like Dubois or Chychrun. However, that's the options the Bruins have at the moment... A rebuild is not in the cards so they are forced with a retool.

I guess Zacha was suppose to be that guy. Signed him at age 25 expecting growth

Yes, that is how it can work sometimes but doing nothing will not change what you have going for you now.

Bruins are allergic to selling pending FAs at the deadline so no way he moves, but hypothetically I think he gets the standard 1st + prospect or mid round pick package that many other veteran rentals go for.

Jeff Skinner, St Louis 2nd and st Louis 3rd.
Plus Savoie
Oh F no. That's horrific on so many levels for a guy who said he didn't even want to step into Edmonton for an All Star Game.

Why would we trade for a guy who doesn't want to be here, number 1.

Why would we pay that much for a Rental, the Bs would be lucky to get anything for with his 15 team NTC.

Not to mention, he's on way to being washed.

They should probably trade Pasta then, too. He is turning 29 this season. By the time anyone from a Marchand trade is able to contribute, Pasta will be out of the years where you could arguably say he could be the best player on a Cup winning team.

The Bruins should be trying to compete for the next 2-3 years. They have a roster full of 28-30 year olds on long term deals. They can't rebuild right now. In a few more years when all there guys at the end of their prime start getting to the wrong side of it, yeah, its going to be some tough times in Boston.

No need to accelerate that. They need some scoring talent. But needing a couple pieces doesn't mean you should blow it up and now need all the pieces.
This was on the basis that the B's are out and he's willing to go. He's a UFA at years end so he can come right back in the off season. Helps bring a piece or pieces to add to the future or for future trade capital. I don't see them moving him so he can be a lifer but not moving because of our competitive window is the wrong reason to hold onto him

Assuming the Bruins are well outside of the playoff picture at the trade deadline and Marchand would be willing to go to a contender, what would your team offer for him? Bruins targets are elite potential prospects and young players with elite potential who are already playing in the NHL.
Montreal offers both 1st rounders, Demidov, Hutson and a choice of Beck or Mailloux.

And just as he comes to shakes hands....

JR: XHEKAJ TO THE BACK OF THE HEAD WITH A CHAIR!!! This was a set up the whole time!!! They never had any intention of acquiring him!!!

Jerry Lawler: What goes around comes around JR. They just stole the title of dirtiest players in the game from The Naycha Boy!!

JR: This makes me sick. You must be real proud of yourself, Kent, real proud. Damn you, Xhekaj! Damn you! Damn you!

Jerry Lawler: Puppies!!! (has another heart attack)
