What is Boston needs ?
let start with this.
Does they want to rebuild - retool - status quo - Add for a playoff spot ?
That's the big question after a response we can know more on Marchand Status
The team is in their prime years aside from Marchand and Coyle on the older side and Lorhei on the younger side.
The defense and goaltending is locked up with long term contracts. The forward group has Pasta and Lindholm signed long term but everyone else is either ELC, a pending RFA/UFA this year (most of them) or next year (Coyle) or the year after (Zacha).
So they need to rebuild the forward group. But, somehow, fast enough that 28 year old Pasta is still in his prime.
So rebuild just isn't possible. They just can't get bad enough to get out of the mushy middle, even if they wanted to. But the forward group has too many complimentary players and not enough guys to complement. It's basically Pasta, a getting up there Marchand, and role players. Role players that can be very good in a role, but they are being asked to do more because their isn't enough high end talent up front.
So yeah. I guess the answer is pray that a star forward falls from the sky?
