Hasn't he been nothing short of hot garbage for the past couple seasons?

He was awful last season

Mediocre the year before but not terrible

He seems back to form this year, if he continues like this all year he's a very good second pair shutdown option

Stupid trade for the Leafs. Doesn't Staal play the left side? So what will be his playing time behind Rielly and Gardiner. Oh the Leafs two best Dmen prospects play the LD...Valiev and Dermot.

If, if the Leafs wanted to spend 5.7 m for four plus years there are dozens of options better than Staal especially in UFA next summer. Why help the Rangers with their cap situation either.

Leafs want to spend 5.7m on a Dman? Then make a trade for Lindholm.

Staal and Girardi won't have much value until nhlpa decides who can be exposed this summer. If those two among many others can be exposed, then it will be easier to trade those types!

Depends how much your willing to retain on the deals.
Even at 50%, a team is taking on 4 more years of the Stall rollercoaster at 2.8 mil.

I like Stall, and I think a deal is there to be made. I think he can probably even out over the remainder of his deal as a #4/5 D man who plays a lot of PK time. BUT he could just as easily become a #7 D man or a #3/4.

I dont think the Leafs would want to pay him much North of 3 million, unless the addition to Stall is big. Like Shestyorkin big.

If Stall @3.25 million is possible, id want a high pick/Shestyorkin and McIlrath.

I don't want to give up on McIlrath and prefer not to give AV satisfaction he could run a fan favorite who deserves better out of town.

That said, he is not a deal breaker.

However, my updated offer is:
Staal at the full pop half of 5.7 = 2.85!
and yes, I yield on Shestyorkin

but no on the Mc for the moment.

an additional sweetener w/in reason, I will yield.

btw, what is coming back to NYR?
A 7th and ...

expiring no NMC deadwood...

Well sure, that would dramatically improve selling Rangers position if they had fallback of not having to protect them and just pay.

As the Leafs, id want to move Polak ($2,250,000 1 yr) and would add in Hunwick/Corrado to get Mc and a pick.

If you want to add a NHL defenseman to your roster, you're going to have to pay him. Kinda the way it works.

The post suggested trading Girardi for Horton. Horton is LTIR so his cap doesn't count....what benefit do the Leafs get moving that for Girardi's God awful contract?

Why do you offer trades where NYR retain 50% on longterm contracts to good players? Stepan and now Staal.... It would never happen, dont understand why you even bother

Staal was just beat up from multiple injuries...eye, concussion, knee...

He had also logged insane minutes over the past number of years.

This summer was the first time he had time to heal and rest properly...

He has looked very good all season.

I will do this as I said:

to move Staal's NMC

but if ya want Mc, too that is something else.
I want a seriously better offer than that.

you are obviously suffering short term memory loss
I surrendered Stepan at that number ONLY to move BOTH Staal AND Girardi, and their corresponding NMCs.
yes we'd only be moving half the contracts and have to take bad contracts in return, but we would be rid of the NMCs, which is a big whoop this year.

He has, and accordingly, his value should be up commensurate.
However, we still have to ditch him and G to be free of these NMCs

Ya? Which NHL defenseman are you sending along with Girardi?

Bold statements from a guy who's team chooses to put an A on an AHL defenseman. Though I guess that's okay because he's only making 625k over league minimum. Cause, you know, it's better to have 15k in available cap space, than NHL players for a team in the highest revenue generating hockey market.

Nice rebuttal. ....Girardi is still terrible and his contract still sucks.

...you've gotta work on your rebuttal because the TML defense is still terrible and their goalie is shelled regularly. Hopefully they learn faster than Edmonton.

I really don't see the aversion to taking on Girardi's help for this season, it's not like they need to tank to get Mathews anymore. Besides, if you can figure out a way to get out from Dion Phaneauf's stellar deal, you sure can figure out a way to get out of Girardi's once you no longer needed him.

...how'd I do?;)
