I'm absolutely ecstatic with the way this team is playing. Having said that, I know that these two have contracts that are anchors and I would HATE to protect either one of them in the expansion draft. Besides, we're gearing up for Shattenkirk and we need to shed some salary! :P
They've both increased their trade value (though it couldn't have been any lower prior to the season starting).

What could we realistically get for either or both of them? I'd like to shed some salary here.

I imagine it depends what you package with them to entice someone to pick them up. I seriously doubt they're going anywhere in a hockey trade. Especially with the expansion draft looming

Girardi won't be going anywhere but Staal certainly still has small value even with the expansion draft. That said, neither would be moved this year. People will ask for additional roster players with them and offer back a defenseman that is of the same level of play of Staal or worse - which is entirely pointless, especially right now.

You're not going to be able to just shed his cap.

Best I can do is...

Lupul - 2.625 (50%) for 1.5 years

for

Staal 2.85 (50%) for 4.5 years

You'll only save 225K for the next 1.5 years but if Lupul stays on LTIR then you'll save then you'll only be on the hook for 2.85 for 4.5 years after instead of having 5.7 cap hit.

Yes, that contract is that bad.

How are people even comparing Staal to Girardi? Girardi isnt even a NHL defensemen anymore, Staal is still a solid top 4. Staal´s contract isnt a problem, Girardi and his contract is the problem

Thats ridicolous. Staal is still a top 4 defensemen. His contract isnt the problem. Girardi on other hand is a huge problem. He shouldnt even be playing anymore, he is the biggest anchor in the league

They will buy Girardi out before the expansion draft and possibly make some type of arrangement to get the expansion protection off of Staal like have him waive his nmc. If the Rangers didn't have to protect either of them that would be stellar.

At this point Staal has played well enough. Girardi is the anchor and needs to go.

What D would the Rangers want to protect in the expansion draft?
Other than Staal and Girardi.

Why would Stall waive his NMC and expose himself to the expansion draft?

Why would Stall waive his NMC and expose himself to the expansion draft?

What is the likelihood he would be selected if left unprotected? Convince him of that and motivate him to help the team out, maybe make a deal with Vegas to not pick him for other compensation?

If they couldn't agree to this amiably with Staal, threaten a buyout, bench him, make him miserable. Maybe pride takes over?

I think Girardi will be bought out so this will likely be unnecessary.

McDonagh, Skjei, and Klein, I presume.

McDonagh protected, Staal protected, Skjei exempt, Girardi bought out, Klein protected. UFA moves after the draft. Cap projected to go up by a couple million or more.

I don't think they have increased their value enough for any team to want or take in their contracts.

This is happening...without question...

The cap penalty for buying him out is much less damaging after this year.

They will probably have another D Man (to be acquired before the deadline) that they will have to protect in the expansion draft. I would assume Klein will be unprotected.

Question.

If Stattenkirk is a UFA, does he have the right to say no to Vegas if the pick him up in the draft? If so, you play a game, and wait for the draft to pass before signing him...

Girardi is untradeable unless prospects were going with him.

Guy's contract is so bad, and he is a pretty terrible defenseman.

Columbus fan here. Saad is on the trade block and Girardi is a Torts player.

Would you guys do Girardi for Saad +? Most I would be willing to throw in is a secound
