Player Discussion Marc McLaughlin

Mr. Make-Believe

The happy genius of my household
I totally missed his signing in Boston. Did it happen during the migration?

Really intriguing player. Happy he’s getting a shot in the NHL early. Concerns me that he thinks his flaw is his skating, but there appears to be NHL upside in what I’ve read about him.

Looking forward to seeing him in action.

He looks like former Bruin (the late) Bobby Miller. IIRC also from BIllerica.

Yup, if he plays tomorrow he will be the 3rd kid from Billerica to
play for Boston. The last Billerica kid to play in the NHL was
Tom Fitzgerald, when he played for the Bruins around 2005-06?

I wonder what Mass. town has had the most kids play for the B's?

Signed on the 15th.

Interested to see how he looks tomorrow. He’ll look like Bure next to Foligno.

Smarts can make up for below average skating.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that McLaughlin ends up making a great impression on fans and management, and ends up sticking with the team. Again, totally going out on a limb, but just a vibe I have.

The nice thing about these college UFAs (and guys that play the full four before signing) is that they come in physically developed and with a level of maturity that really helps.
From SI article 2020

With the RoughRiders, he was the recipient of the Curt Hammer Award, given to the USHL player who “distinguishes himself both on and off the ice by demonstrating outstanding performance skills, pride, and determination.”

The award was well-merited, given McLaughlin’s community involvement and team-first attitude:

  • He was present at every game, practice and weightlifting session even though he was battling injuries most of the year.
  • He coordinated players’ community appearances.
  • He worked at a nonprofit childcare center on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7am-9am.
  • On Wednesdays, he mentored students at a local elementary school.
  • McLaughlin coordinated the team’s involvement with the Special Olympics and the Freedom Foundation, where players conversed with and served lunch to veterans.
  • He also volunteered at two senior centers.
  • He delivered cookies to first responders.
  • And he coordinated a fundraiser with a local restaurant to raise money to support the Humboldt Broncos.
Again, for McLaughlin, reflecting on the award brings to mind his teammates and the community, not the personal leadership that merited him the award.

Sounds like a combo Boy Scout\YMCA Award...lol. Bjork had those qualities also.

I watched McLaughlin in The Olympics and to be honest he was just kind of there in the first and only two games he dressed. Did nothing bad or good just there. Myers and the guy that replaced him, Hentges looked a lot better than him.

I was actually surprised he didn't sign with NJ given Fitzgerald
is a Billerica guy or another non playoff team. I would think he would get an immediate look.
