Marc Bergevin Thread -- How you Drouin?

I was unimpressed every time I've seen him play, but as I said, it's just a hunch, could be totally wrong. Would be great if he ends up being that 50pt guy.

I think that is the issue with Hudon. He doesn't impress you but he puts up offensive stats. 4pts in 6 NHL games playing 10 min on the 4th line is pretty impressive to me. Habs need to give him a chance in the middle 6 and see how he can do with elite level talent. The biggest issue I see is I think he needs to play with a big center who will draw attention. Habs don't have this

Ottawa lost Methot and Nashville lost Neal for nothing.

Seriously I really like Bergevin off season thus far.

Losing Emelin's bad contract wirhout buy out or trading an asset, finally getting rid of Beaulieu (the mistake man) and acquiring Drouin for futures.

Now please, sign Markov and Radulov today !

Is this a joke? This is more condemning of the Habs than it is of Ottawa or Nashville that the best player available for Vegas to choose was Emelin. It's not hard to protect your best players when your team ****ing sucks.

Subban wasn't the reason he won GM of the year. Preds are a well build team through the draft. Subban is not their best D-man. He is one of a very strong top 4D that works together. That top 4D is deadly!

Habs got Weber. Yeah, he's not Subban, he's Weber. We need to get use to this and accept what Weber brings to the table. Weber in front of Price is a very good situation for the Habs and we can count on this for many years.

all about goaltending and defensive play.

100%. When Jordie Benn and Andrew Shaw (and his anchor of a contract) are protected it speaks volumes about the depth of talent on this club. Most teams protected their talent. Habs protect "character" and "intangibles." Brutal.

Sure, a team that sucked so bad that was 8th (overall) in the standings last year. So it's ok to always whine about his job but if I like what he does, it's a joke. Crazy times on hfboards. I'm been here long enough to know that we are at the rock bottom of pessimism.

And Emelin was talent ? Since when ?

Bergevin made it almost 100% sure that one of Plekanec or Emelin would be taken, without having to lose a pick in the process. That's 4.1M free cap space for us, something not many teams managed to do yesterday. I'm totally fine with that line of thinking if he can back it up by spending the money wisely.

You mean the same team that finished 1st in their division?

Cue the "yeah but we were eliminated in the 1st round"

Ya'll do realise we didn't have to protect 3 of our most talented players right?

Haters gonna hate

Yea too bad I guess. Some people are just pissed off because right now they have nothing to say against Bergevin. He could very well do bad things next but for now, all his moves this summer are what we are hoping for.

:handclap:

Norris voting is so lame. who the hell would give Weber a 1st place vote. He was brutal from December-February and played no small role in getting his coach fired. Real Norris-worthy performance from the ol Fisherman :naughty:

Weren't we almost all ecstatic when MT got fired and CJ hired ? Weber and Price did a good job after all.

Let's be honest he's been a mediocre GM, let's see if he lands us another 4th line winger 'cause centers are too hard to get. For this summer he's been doing fine but this team still needs quality LDs and centers.

So far so good. I don't want to lose Galchenyuk, though. We'll see what happens with him. I can't see a possible trade where we get rid of him and that we come out as a better team.

Dude we protected Paul Byron

Look at everyone else's protected list and try to find a player that bad.
Yes I know he had a good season ......

And Emelin was talent ? Since when ?

The Atlantic Division was one of the weakest division in the NHL

Tampa lost Stamkos early on and they're somewhat a young team
No one was considering Ottawa to be #2 in the division and they almost beat the Habs to #1. Some young players helped a lot while some other aging players didn't do much
Florida was a very young team and a mess. They lost some key players to injuries.
Buffalo is in full reconstruction mode.
Toronto was a very young team, almost in full reconstruction mode. The fact that they made the playoffs was amazing
Boston is a mess

I haven't checked the stats but I'm pretty sure the Habs had a lot of points in those Atlantic division games. I wanted to check them out right now but I didn't find quickly those said stats.

Losing Emelin is a bad thing considering that your D, as of right now, is something like :

Davidson - Weber
Benn - Petry
Lernout - Jerabek
(Markov)

Sure. There might be UFA signings but you have to consider that Montreal isn't the only team that will look at UFA and may not be the #1 choice on everyone's list.

You realize that most teams protected their top 7 forwards and top 3 defence right? So the players available were mainly bottom six forwards or bottom pairing D..

Nashville protected a 31 point player as their 4th forward, guess their team sucks.

Agreed, but 1 trade and losing a player to Vegas doesn't make up for 5 mediocre years

It's your opinion. I don't see him as a mediocre GM at all. I think we are doing all right, but maybe he's not the GM to put us over the top. He needs to show that he's able to put the pieces to win championships, not just be a good season team.

He's a good GM to play with the cap space and his contracts are never that bad compared to other teams (Clarkson, Dustin Brown, Marian Gaborik....). He did overpay for players but it's never for 7-8 years.

I can't think that's 5 MEDIOCRE years. I don't agree at all. The results are there in the season, but maybe he's not the one to make us win the Cup. But we had 4 good seasons out of 5 with Bergevin there. He made a lot of small moves that paid off (a little bit more, it was not a home run, but it paid off)

He did trade for Weber who is signed long term

Shaw is a terrible contract and a 6 year deal

besides that I agree, Petry is alright and Moen was a terrible one at the time.

Yes I know he had a good season ......

Like over half the teams in the league protected worse players than Paul Byron, on top of that Byron is on a steal of a deal even if he doesn't come close to duplicating last season's production.

You're so predictable, it's even become boring.

Anything to rip on Weber. Guessing he's the only player in the league to go through a slump in a season... :shakehead

How dare you ?! How is he a bad player ? Because size ? Look, Pitts didn't win because they had Paul Byrons, they won on the shoulders of their franchise players, but still they had a lot of smallish speedish depth forwards and they made it. These players can make it happen when they're complimentary pieces, which Byron is. He barely gets PP time for his points and makes a lot of positive things happen on the PK, if you wanted to see Byron gone for nothing (not protecting him at his freakingly low salary) just say it so we all have a good laugh.

You mean one of the better PKers in the league, who's also a 20 goal scorer and on a bargain of contract??

That guy?

Yeah, he's terrible!! :shakehead

The Montreal Canadiens, the champions of the regular season and the October Cupâ„¢. What if I told you the regular season was nothing more than a glorified pre-season and the playoffs are the REAL season. How do Habs fans feel about winning the pre-season? Nothing Bergevin does this off season could make up for 6 years of ****! Especially if he hits another homerun trade because it just proves that it was possible to get this team help when they needed it, wasting Price's historic performance, instead hiding behind excuses and holding on to a dud of a coach.

Cap space is all well and good but who's out there as UFA to spend that $$ on? We have nothing to offer in trade anymore. Contrary to popular belief Emelin was a useful player when played in the correct role. Our D is now scary thin and if MB addresses that weakness the same way he addressed our lack of scoring at the deadline then we're in big trouble.

$4.1 million dollars can't play defence.
