Don't think he will resign and we might as well get something for Kovalchuk before losing him for nothing.

Sure, if that something is at least top 60 pick, I'm on board.

If not, I'd rather see him on Suzuki's wing building confidence and helping his offense. I'm not convinced a third round pick in the hands of Timmins, in this draft, has any worth at all.

I think the only convincing argument one could make is how keeping him could impact draft position.

I mean he would be here for like 20 more games, might as well get something.

Kovalchuk would help us win games and this team needs to draft one of Laf, Byfield, Rossi, Drysdale, Holtz, Stutzle or Raymond. With Drouin and Byron coming back and Kovalchuk continuing to do well because he knows it's his last chance in the NHL might jeopardize this.

Best of all possible worlds:

Kovy is dealt for a 2nd and some other meager add-on.
- What is the point in holding on to someone that is clearly poised to try and win something in his final stint, and has realistically cost us nothing. Pure upside move, and one that offers our awful scouting team another kick at the bucket.

Tatar/ Petry are both dealt in packages that includes firsts and prospects or some palatable combination of picks and B prospects.
- I fail to see how overpaying for 30+ vets fits into any kind of long term considerations. Get real-- we suck. Make the moves. This is not a mere acquisiton of futures; it is the affirmation that the future has begun. Roster finally opens up.

Domi is dealt in any kind of lateral move.
- Not confident in his future at center, and this team needs more size going into the future. ADD to that a new contract that will most likely be in the 5 million dollar range and you have a clear dud moving forward.

Price/Weber are willing to listen after we tank towards the TDL. Nothing happens, but the draft offers a very interesting possibility for real change.

Most likely: Kovy and thompson/cousins are recycled for some late picks that fall like rain into the ocean of mediocrity.

And now he's doing even better. You don't see how theyve clicked ? How much more space and chances Suzuki gets ? That's what surrounding your young players looks like. The **** is a third round pick going to do ? The argument here is trading Kovy will improve the draft odds. Or that he had a verbal agreement with MB. That's it.

You have to balance whether keeping him will significantly alter where we end up and whether having a guy to help your best prospect represents more value than the spots lost at the draft, if any. You could even offset that draft position loss by trading other pieces.

But the third round pick is basically ****.

Totally agree. The chances of landing a good player in the 3rd round are pretty slim and then when you add the "expertise" of our scouting staff it gets slimmer. Hold on to him. Maybe he'll re-sign with us at a hometown discount.:sarcasm: But if he is really annoying some fans and we really have to unload him, I would trade him for a prospect with a D+1 or +2 record. I don't want to trust Timmins to make a selection..

It’s an actual farm system. Like the good teams have. (Referencing the Oilers)

“I think the organization has been doing it the right way,” said Jones, “letting guys stay down there and work on their games and not rush them up too quick. It’s paying off.

Montreal really needs to stop rushing kids to play on the bottom lines. Ie Poehling and Kk.

I can't say I understand what you're getting at here.

Development doesn't exist. Nothing ever has any impact. Players always reach the exact potential they should have regardless of circumstances. This is what I've been told here.

Kenny Holland would have a huge say in this...it worked for years in Detroit. Funny how some teams can make it work, and others cannot resist the temptation to have them rushed into the NHL.

Good news for Edmonton. And there's the benefit of adding an experienced voice in the GM's chair. Not an intern. A guy who know the job and knows how to succeed. Holland's relationship with the Wings may have gone sour, but he presided over a near-dynasty there and understands the job better than most. Contrast that with the continued rookie mistakes and copycat fumbling we accept as normal over here.

Trading Petry and Tatar would pretty much ensure we finish in the 6-8 range. I'd move them before Kovy as I see value in playing him with Suzuki right now. More value than a sub 60 pick anyways.

At some point, someone will talk about chucky, well no

MB after this weekend, should have his mind made up to sell

he won't be selling anybody of value like tatar or petry,

MB wants to make the playoffs next year, and that won't happen if he trades them for picks....well it still won't happen anyway, but MB doesn't realize that

How in God’s name can MB still be employed here to makes these kinds of decisions. There is ZERO reason for him not to be fired. ZERO

Your last point is accurate and is what I think happens. Will a team step in and offer something we can't refuse for either Tatar or Petry? Doubt it. They will call to ask but they will try to acquire for cheap IMO.

There is no evidence he wants to make the playoffs next year...he did not want to make it last year or this year.

For me, only strategy is this one.
  • Send the kids down to help Laval make the playoffs with significatn icetime and key roles. Only 1 kid left to send down....Poehling. Though...I think I'd send Mete down too but I guess that's too much
  • Then, play the Cousins, and the Thompson and the Weal 40 minutes a game and hope they do well enough to look good personnally, but obviously the lack of talent won't make this team win
  • Sell them for higher picks they should have had before.
  • Recall the kids if Laval finally happens to not be close to the playoffs.
  • Play the hell out of those kids in key situations. The usual suspects plus Vejdemo and Evans.
  • If Laval does make it...well who cares who you play with you....Keep the great kids in Laval and graduate Morgan Adams-Moisan in the NHL for all I care so we'd lose as much as we can.

I don't get what the plan is. At least after 2017 you could say he was going into a rebuild.

now it's what? They only traded Pacioretty because it was a complicated situation.

seriously?

playing Price last season for the last 25 games was not an effort to make the playoffs?

LOL

there is no evidence what you are saying is true either,

lets talk after the trade deadline passes,

if MB wants to make it next year, he does little at the trade deadline, which is what im expecting to happen,

if MB doesn't want to make it next year he trades at least ONE of petry or tatar,

i am expecting pretty much the same roster come next october,

thats not what i want, but i think its reality

SERIOUSLY?....So not trading for a backup goalie last year ...was trying to make the playoffs....so not trading for anyone to improve your PP....was trying to make the playoffs....so not trading for ROR....was trying to make the playoffs....so not spending your cap space...was trying to make the playoffs.
